Remember the headline a couple of weeks ago that Austin's economy would be spared from this economic downturn that dare not speak its name? Here are the headlines from today's news in Austin:
Dell to lay off 900 people
Motion lays off 18% of workforce in Austin
New home starts at 5 year low
Food prices on the rise
Oil down, gas prices hit record
Nope...nothing but rosy economic news all around. Someone pass the champagne!
This should make all the true Austinites happy, now it can go back to the way it was before all those bastard corporate types took over, maaaaaaaaaaaaaan.
Bring on the smelly hippies, pot, and Shiner Bock duuuuuuuuuuude.
I just want the Californians to go back home! Git!
If we can return to smelly hippies, pot ($10!), Lone Star Beer, along with Armadillo World Headquarters, Liberty Lunch, Soap Creek Saloon, and while we're at it, $4 a semester hour tuition at UT(ok adjust for inflation = 2X minimum wage), somehow I think it would make all Austinites more happy. With that comes Preston Smith and Dolph Briscoe as Guv. but it might be better than the current occupant.
Yeah, it's hitting here in Billings MT too. Wells Fargo laid off 70 people in the last year, Big Sky airline closed down due to not enough profits ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23890366/ )laying several people, and Krispy Kreme just closed their doors as of last night laying off 20 people.
I had made a previous comment on another blog that the Depression hasn't affected too badly here. Perhaps I am wrong.
Click my name to see my website I have created. I think he's the answer to problems.
So how can you tell if there is a recession in Billings, is there like less people around fucking sheep or what?
I was in Austin for the SXSW festivals and had never spent much time there before. I loved the city! I guess your economy is tanking, too. I live in Boston.
