Sometimes Don't You Just Hate Austin?

Talk about whiny people that think they are entitled to something! The story on KXAN about the debate first being closed to the public and then only having 100 tickets for people has the comments section fired up with people that are outraged they can't go to a debate. As if it were a conspiracy to deny them access.

Really? How many debates have there been now and how many people were sitting in those audiences? Don't you think thousands of people in Vegas and Ft. Lauderdale and Charleston all were dying to get in? But Austin, no...if you come here you should play by our rules. That means you bend and twist to suit every one. Just shut it already, Austin. Get over yourself. You are a mid-size market that consistently votes Democrat and have no influence in national elections.

Then, there's the comments like this one:

Julie 02-13-2008 18:40:56
One more thing - the reason I am NOT voting for Obama or Clinton is I am tired of my tax dollars going to people who do not work, don't want to work or find excuses for a handout. I am not rich, I work and barely make it but don't take the handout and electing them would mean you and I foot the bill - no thanks
This is one of those dumb people we talk about that consistently vote against their best interest. That struggling family trying to keep their head above water and pay their bills and think the Republicans are saving them. They think it's not fair that their hard earned tax dollars go to help poor and lazy people. HA! Julie's getting beat down by the Republican party and the whole time she's begging for it!

Julie, when your Adjustable Rate Mortgage breaks your budget and you wind up foreclosed upon and moving into a tiny apartment and then lose your job because of excessive absenteeism dealing with your personal issues, let me know what the GOP is going to do for you.

Julie's comment is why I like it over here at PinkDome. The people here know policy and political maneuvering and cause/effect things, unlike the unchecked and unwashed masses that we have to run into on the street every day. We should make these political blogs in Texas a private club and all get jackets with a crest on them!

PD, this rant is the reason I love you.

Gosh, I wonder why people want to go to the debate?

Maybe the person who said this has some insight:

"That a cynic like me is excited about a debate? Yes. It's true. I am. Maybe because I'll be there. I can't wait to see what goes into the production and what happens behind the scenes. I still haven't made up my mind on who I will vote for, so maybe once I see them in person I'll know."

Nah.

jed at February 14, 2008 9:18 AM

Oh, don't get me wrong...I think people should be excited about it. That doesn't mean you should expect you get to go and then get all pissy because you can't.

Pinkdome at February 14, 2008 11:24 AM

Is Dawna Dukes gonna be at the debate?

lovin dd at February 14, 2008 11:51 AM

Which party's self interest will most likely benefit this lady. Let's see, if she remains poor and never climbs out of it then she is more likely to vote D than R. If she improves her socioeconomic standing than she is more likely to vote R. So, which party has the vested interest in actually helping people succeed?

The Democratic party...keeping people poor better than ever.

West Horn at February 14, 2008 1:26 PM

Maybe people get pissy because all the media outlets get their hopes up with the big news that there's going to be a presidential debate RIGHT HERE IN AUSTIN! So for about five seconds it seems really glittery and fancy, that people living right here in our town would have the chance to see the next president of the United States, in person, in their lifetime. It's exciting!

But when it's invitation only, well, we know who's gonna get the invitations and it sure ain't us. So it's a major let-down. The debate might be HAPPENING in our town, but when we're watching it on TV we're about as close to it as we would be if it were held anywhere else. It loses that luster.

causal observer at February 14, 2008 2:30 PM

Listen people. We would all like to be there. However, we must remember that this is a TV event, CNN and TDP dont want 5000 people at the event. It will be live on tv and they want it to run well without interuption. Thus, they dont want to take the chance that some radical activist with an agenda will make everyone look like a fool on national tv.

West Horn -

Actually, you're completely off. The economy does better under Democrats than Republicans. It's fact. Friedmanite economics are a failure at actually creating broad prosperity and driving wage growth. Well, for the bottom 95%. The top 5% do quite well.

PD is right. Julie is a stupidiot.

mcblogger at February 15, 2008 9:23 AM

Gosh, I would think that most Austinites would rather just watch the debate from home so they can suck on their bongs and not shower. Weird.

It's funny how people on the left believe they are special and deserve things when they aren't and don't.

anon at February 15, 2008 9:40 AM

To adopt a posture that either the Dems OR the Reps can save the us from the quagmire that is our broken government is laughable. Both sides have worked equally hard at screwing the country up.

The Nanny State vs. The Corporate Blank Check. Pardon me for not getting excited about either mindset. All I can do at this point is vote for Ron Paul.
