No Evidence That Iran Is Building Nuclear Weapon. So? What's Your Point?

The U.N. is clearly trying to warn America that the second time around the world will be paying much closer attention to the lies coming from the White House. The question is, are we? The U.N. says there is no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon, but that doesn't stop Dick Cheney from issuing dire warnings about it.

Vice President Dick Cheney has raised the prospect of "serious consequences" if Iran were found to be working toward developing a nuclear weapon. Last week, the Bush administration announced harsh penalties against the Iranian military and state-owned banking systems in hopes of raising pressure on the world financial system to cut ties with Tehran
.

Seriously? Are we going to fall for this all over again?

Let's be fucking clear about a couple of things.
1. The US wasn't the only intelligence source on the WMD. There were several other countries confirming this.
2. Saddam Hussein HAD used muster gas to kill thousands of Kurds so, yes, he did have at one time WMD and it was likely that he still had them.

Let's not pretend that we just made all this shit up, we had damn good reasons to go to Iraq including the fact that Saddam Hussein was blocking UN inspectors from doing their job.

If the pussies at the UN don't want to back up their rules/laws with real teeth, then let's disband the organization because then it truly will be useless.

If you don’t think Saddam was worth overthrowing or that the leaders of Iran are shit nuts and dangerouse then fine, but don’t be ignorant.

I, for one, welcome our new Iranian overlords.

oh anon. don't forget that the US installed saddam in the eighties. and he was our best best friend. and we sold him all those weapons and chemicals.

and oh. i suppose we should take out EVERY dictatorial regime in the world? right? why stop at saddam? why not north korea, why not all those south american banana republics? oh. they don't have all that yummy oil.

facty at October 29, 2007 12:10 PM

Facty,
Miss the point much?

anon at October 29, 2007 12:45 PM

We just don't need to get stuck in another war. Lets concentrate on the war we already have in Iraq.

anony at October 29, 2007 1:49 PM

Facty... No we didn't. We armed him to the teeth but we didn't install him. He ascended to the Presidency in '79 after Hassan died. He'd been in the upper echelons of the Ba'ath Party for years though.

Anon... which other countries? The Italians, Germans and Brits all said the intelligence being cooked up was very suspect. In fact, Powell's presentation to the UN was based almost exclusively on mobile chem labs which turned out to be nothing more than hydrogen plants for artillery balloons.

Look, I'm not going to say that Iran doesn't have hegemonic ambitions in the region, but has it occurred to you that there is not a clear and present danger from Iran? Has it occurred to you that we don't have the manpower or money to invade? Or that by simply enlisting the Russians we could avoid the whole thing?

I know you're capable of more nuanced and devious thought. Think the options through...There are FAR meaners ways to castrate the Iranians that don't cost us as much.

mcblogger at October 29, 2007 7:44 PM

Who said anything about going to war or invading Iran? So now if countries are doing shit they shouldn't be and we condemn them it means we are going to war?
I'm not worried about Iran getting the nukes because as history (recently) has proven Israel will take care of it. The more the camel fucker president keeps talking about erasing Israel the more secure I feel.
Again, let me stress, the UN has condemened the Iranains as well, this so called world body that is suppose to police shit like this. So then when we go in to enoforce the laws that these countries break, that the UN has mandated, then we're the assholes right?

You guys want to make it sound that we are picking and choosing countries to take action against becuase what? They run shitty 7-11s here? No fuckers, they are breaking all kinds of UN laws and no other countries want to enforce them.

Again, please, let's break up the UN if no one is going to enforce the laws they create.

anon at October 30, 2007 10:48 AM

Agreed... part of the problem is that it gives the UN supernational powers. We would have to obey them as well.

You ready for that and to commit troops permanently to the UN? And money?

mcblogger at October 30, 2007 11:01 AM

The UN has turned out to be nothing more than a cover organization for rouge nations to act badly, look at the countries that sit on their Human Rights committee.

Corrupt and useless. How many of the UN leaders made a killing during the Oil for Food sham with Iraq.

anon at October 30, 2007 12:09 PM

Anon- Many of them. And many of them were Americans. But don't worry... I'm thinking the nutmegger cowboy will pardon good old Oscar.

McTool,
Along with several others.

BTW did anyone else see the editorial in this month's Texas Monthly proclaiming that they aren't skewed to the left. I almost pissed myself I was laughing so hard.

anon at October 30, 2007 2:15 PM

Anon,

How about the fact that the "muster" gas was no longer viable for weapons use? How about the fact that Saddam wasn't even a threat to the region? How about the fact that we went into a country without understanding it and now can't put the cat in the bag?

War with Iran would trigger a World War. The entire region will be drawn in and we don't have the military to fight it. I for one will not go to war so Dick Cheney can feel like a man.

PanzerDSS at October 30, 2007 3:47 PM

PDSS - No it wouldn't. The Russians would stay out because we'd buy them off by giving them free reign in the former SSR's. As long as the Chinese can keep getting natgas for their plastics, they don't especially care. What makes it so ridiculous is that it would fully throw Iraq into chaos and to stabilize we'd have to ship in over 1,000,000 troops. At a minimum. And the costs would be about 500-750 bn per year and we don't have the tax base to support it.

Government is already sucking up too much capital to finance DoD and our current overseas commitments.
