Y'all know I am not a journalist and I never interview people, but I was asked if I wanted to speak to Tony and Dex who were married by Tori Spelling on her reality show(video). I thought why the hell not and I learned a few things that I thought I would share. Read the story by clicking permalink!
I talked to Tony and Dex just after they returned from their honeymoon in Mexico. Right off, their marriage is different from yours because you only went to Galveston for a weekend. Tony and Dex have been a couple for seven years and had talked for a while about strengthening their commitment through marriage. They felt they were missing out on milestones in their relationship that their straight counterparts had.
When I asked them why it was important to get married in such a public way, their answer is the same reason anyone gets married. Tony and Dex wanted to celebrate their love in front of their family and cement that bond between them. In the gay community, it's awfully easy to end a relationship. One reason is because there is not the bond of marriage that can help couples get through rough times together. When you stand up in front of God and everybody and make a commitment, you can't just walk out...you have to work it out.
I asked, "Why do it so publicly? What political statement do you want to make?" Tony answered, "We got married, even though it's not recognized by law, because it means something to us. This marriage isn't about government regulations, politics and denied rights, it's about our love."
After their wedding, they became involved in "Let California Ring." This campaign is aimed at showing that marriage for gays and lesbians isn't a political issue or a religious issue, it's a common sense issue.
When I asked them how their marriage is a threat to heterosexual marriage, they both laughed and said simply, "It isn't. Gay marriage only strengthens marriage. By allowing gays and lesbians to marry, the gay community is lifted through good examples of strong bonds between people that love each other. The heterosexual community is supported by good examples of loving relationships."
Tony and Dex agree that the religious argument is mostly generational. Their parents generation simply believes that marriage between two men or women is wrong in the eyes of God. They couldn't come up with a way to change the minds of those people, but they do believe that setting an example of strong committed relationships will remove the fear and mystery associated with gay marriage.
I support committed relationships and I believe they do nothing but strengthen family bonds and family values. I have, quite honestly, grown tired of the political and religious debate and I'm glad to see that Tony and Dex wouldn't let others stop them from doing what their hearts tell them is right. Tax break or not.
