The state's about to start buying your old piece of shit car for $3,000. In an effort to retire polluting cars, the state has a new Republican sponsored program to buy up old cars. "By cleaning up some of the old cars and getting them off the road, you could put a real dent in the pollution numbers," said state Sen. Kip Averitt, R-Waco, who led the bill through the Legislature.
How much is budgeted for this? Where is the money coming from? Is there a 'cap' per year on how many cars the state will purchase? What will the state do with the cars? If they go back on the road then that's perpetuating the problem.
Oh, and furthermore with these great efforts at reducing pollution, what is the state doing to the large companies that pollute? Higher taxes, penalties or incentives to meet tougher standards?
It's an interesting idea, but I believe entirely stupid. (Chron)
California did this years and years ago... I wonder how it turned out for them? News reports were anecdotally positive.
I ride a bike to work, and I have to breathe in the smoke of these polluters...I think it is a GREAT idea. I don't care which party is supporting it.
At least it's an idea. I mean, where are the state Democrats on this issue? It's nice to see a Republican actually caring about the environment instead of trying to install more strip mining and turning the state into a giant version of Houston.
