Dissent to a 51% Mandate
Houston's sexually oriented business ordinance was drafted while I was in high school. It was driven by the topless club 13 Coins, which opened up in what had been a Sambo's, right across the street from Spring Woods High School.
The owner refused to give interviews to the Post or Chronicle (remember when we had two-newspaper towns?), but he thought it was cute to talk to the high school newspaper reporter. That would be me, of course. I believe he offered me a job, sight unseen, which could have led to my lucrative career in the sexually oriented entertainment industry.
Alas, instead, I chose to graduate and go on to college and then on to low-paying jobs. The SOB ordinance was put in place. 13 Coins eventually failed. The building is now a Blockbuster. And Houston remains as pure as the driven snow.
