The president's new war advisor talked about re-instating the draft in an NPR interview. "I think it makes sense to certainly consider it," Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said. "And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table." Yes, let's do put this on the table. Selfishly, I think this would be the instigation this country would need to take to the streets and finally rise up against this administration. Of course, I'd have to sober up first.
Nice theory, why don't you ask all the dudes that ended up in Vietnam after they claimed to be gay how that worked out for them.
Sorry anon, you din't understand my point. The poor gay souls that ended up in Vietnam did so AFTER the fact and BEFORE "don't ask, don't tell".
Today, under current government regulations, the military CANNOT (by regulation) take on a self-avowed gay ("I am gay") Therefore, they would never even up in Vietnam (Iraq, etc.) to suffer whatever the soldiers did that you refer to.
And BTW, saying you are "gay" to avoid military service is a FACT not a THEORY, as you suggest. If you do not think so, call your nearest Army recruiter, tell 'em your gay and see if they want you.
No, I got your point.
So you don't think that anybody that was drafted to go to Vietnam ever said "I'm gay" to get out of going and then had to go anyway?
There's not going to be a draft so I think the whole thing is moot.
Hmmm, I know at least one person who told his Army recruiter he was gay when he went for his first meeting to sign up. It was his dream to serve, and all the recruiter said was "that's fine, just don't talk about it."
If they activate the Selective Service (the draft never went away) People will be expected to prove they are gay to avoid service.
i'm sure that many of us gay men are will be willing to pose for photos should a few handsome straight men need that proof.
The draft will NEVER work in the US as long as the ban on gays is in effect.
Let me briefly explain. After listening to many draft-age men younger than myself that so not desire to go to Iraq/Afgan., they are prepared to say 3 simple words which will keep them out of the military.
"I am gay."
And of the "younger" generation, these words do not have the negative connotation of days-gone-by. So until the military ends the silly ban on gays, forget a draft. Or, institute the draft and have 30-50% say they are "gay" just so they don't even have to get on the bus.
