400!

Texas executed its 400th prisoner since the death penalty was reinstated here in 1982. Critics say that the death penalty is not a deterrent for criminals. I agree, in its current incarnation. The death penalty should be carried out much more swiftly in order to be a deterrent. This prisoner had been on death row since 1998. For all the hand-wringing over the death penalty let's take a moment to remember a 49-year old woman he shot twice in the head.

Let's see how long before we hit the next execution milestone!

Oh, and to all those opposed to the death penalty eat yourselves up in the comments. Don't care.

400th ? Why so few? Death rows are full of murderers and other scum. Get cracking. I do not care how they are executed. Execute them.

The scumbag said he was going home to allah. He did NOT apologize for murdering. Wow. Some muslim. He is a murderer, not someone atoning. NO matter, he will answer to someone/something now.

ACLU and other death penalty whiners: are you people ever victims of violent crime? When your family member gets killed, do you go hug the murderer? I want to hear more about how whiners and protesters have opened their homes to ex cons. Let rapists stay in your daughters room. Let robbers work in your store. Duh.

Bring on 401! Cook 'em twice!

We have no time to be coddling and defending those who prey on others without mercy. Murderers, drug dealers, pedophiles, anyone whose crime is proven to harm and/or kill others should be given the most severe sentence without possibility of appeal or parole. If you are guilty, you are guilty, if the court determines that you can't be rehabilitated or that your crime is so severe you should get life or death, then YOU'RE GONE!

Its time to get back to the laws of nature - time to get back to Natural Selection in the case of criminals. If you have nothing to contribute to society but crime, pain, and/or death then GOODBYE! Sorry to those who care for the condemned, but maybe you should have cared a little sooner.

It's time to thin the herd.

Jeanette Popp was Chairperson of Texas Moratorium Network from 2001-2004. Jeanette's daughter Nancy was murdered in Austin in 1988.

Jeanette became intimately familiar with the many flaws of the Texas criminal justice system after two innocent men were wrongfully convicted of her daughter's murder and spent 12 years in prison. They were exonerated and released in 2001. The real killer was convicted in December 2001.

Jeanette successfuly pressured the District Attorney not to seek the death penalty for her daughter's murderer. Jeanette's riveting testimony in 2001 helped convince two Texas legislative committees to vote in favor of moratorium legislation. She has traveled across Texas and the nation speaking out against the death penalty.

Hallaluya, someone with a brain and a heart.I get so sick of the people who come out against capitol punishment. As you said, it sure wasn't humane to shot that clerk in the head let alone twice. I would welcome the return of public executuions. Make our children watch and explain that this is the cost of taking another life. I'll bet that those who whine about how inhumane the executions are would sing a very different tune if it were one of their loved one on the recieving end of murder, rape, torture, abuse and so on. I have always believed that if a person, man or woman, does the crime then their human rights no longer exist.

I am a full believer in the death penalty. I believe that it should be expanded to include all sex predators, especially child predators. I was a counselor for victims of sexual abuse, rape, and family violence a few years ago. My colleagues and I all agreed that probation and registration, as a sex offender, was not going to deter anyone from hurting someone else. I would like the family members of the victims to be able to decide how “inhumane” the death penalty should be. I am a loyal Texan by birthright and a true believe in if you take someone life, yours is forfeit. And to all those bleeding hearts, suck it up. Unless you have looked in a victim’s family’s eyes and saw their pain and heart ache, you can’t tell me that they should be against that person having their life taken also.
