Cops Shoot Black Man. Again.

Here we go again in Austin. A police officer shot a black man. In the back. Twice. As he was running away from the officer.

It is well known that I come down in favor of the police during situations like this, but I have to tell you it sure does seem like the Austin Police Department shoots more than their fair share of minority folks. Like in a per capita way. I wonder if Grits has any statistics to compare Austin to somewhere like Atlanta to see if that theory bears out.

Austin's crime rate is a fraction of the crime rate in Dallas or Houston. That's why I laugh when people talk about the Terrible East Austin. Puh-lease... But for your edification:

Look, when you get pulled over for speeding by APD, they roll out half the fleet to give you a ticket. Thus, it is only reasonable to think they would shoot someone for running away.

Perhaps if the minority's that are being shot so "frequently" in the first place were causing trouble then there wouldn't be so many of them getting shot. He lunged forward in the video and pushed the officer. That is assaulting an officer, then 2 officers were trying to bring him under control, and he was fighting them, then he got away and ran, the officer said he saw a gun and fired. They found a gun feet away from the body. Is the officer suppose to wait to be shot at and then shoot back? I think the phrase is "kill or be killed" and the officer made the decision benefiting himself and his partner and not the officer assaulting thug. God forbid an officer prefer his life over the guys who just assaulted him. If the guy had been white this wouldn't be as big an issue, but no he's black the officer is white so it must be a race based killing. The kid had a warrant out for dealing drugs too. I have an idea, stop breaking the law, stop carrying guns to places you shouldn’t have them (like a club), stop doing things that could get you killed or in prison and maybe the officer involved shootings would go down since they would have no reason to shoot. However a man (white or black) who just assaulted an officer and then ran holding a gun is a reason for the officer to shoot, the officer shouldn’t have to wait for the guy to turn around and look at him with the gun because it takes a split second for a guy to turn around and get a shot off.

Will Wynn doesn't care about black people.

That's right Dylan, nothing that's never happened to you could ever happen to a southern black. No reason to panic, negro, it's not like a cop would shoot a man in the back. Oh, wait.

A-historical much, racist fuckstain?

Wow did you post that one comment enough? Your right, historically blacks have been mistreated. And your right, historically cops have been more violent towards blacks. But did you see the news last night? They had the officers friend on, who showed pictures of he and officer Olsen’s trip this past summer to Africa to do humanitarian work. I don’t know about you, but I see the KKK constantly boarding planes to Africa to do humanitarian work. This cop was obviously not a racist. Otherwise he wouldn’t have cared about the Africans he helped. How many civil servants who spend their usual work day protecting citizens take THEIR vacation time and personal money to go do humanitarian work in Africa? Sounds like a hard core racist to me. But that is the first thing every activist group has jumped on. And what about the guy who was shot. He had just assaulted the officer. Had prior convictions for drug dealing, possession, and assault. Sounds like a stand up citizen.

A-historical much? Racist fuckstain?
History is my favorite subject. Especially American history. If you were referring to me as a racist fuckstain then how bout you tell young black people to stop referring to whites as crackers and shit like that. My family is white we don’t use racial slurs when referring to blacks. So you ignorant fuck. Fuck your ignorant self. Contribute SOMETHING to society. Instead of making it worse. Then get back to me. If its in your capacity.

And don’t say I am a racist and am saying blacks don’t contribute to society. I am talking about all the “thugs” out there. Not the honest hard working ones. And I will say the same thing about whites. If you are not contributing to society whether you are white, black, brown, purple or green, I don’t give a flying rats ass, you don’t need to be in it.

Dylan at June 7, 2007 10:37 PM

Wow, Dylan, you're one funny gringo (said affectionally), admitting that your family is white.

Isn't the primay issue that the man was shot twice - in the back? Seems to me that getting rid of a cop who shoots even one person in the back is one hell of a contribution to society. Even beats paying taxes.

The only thing the civil rights groups are looking at is a black man was shot in the back by a white cop. This man had a warrant out for his arrest, ASSAULTED AN OFFICER! And then ran from police. He did not have to assault an officer, then fight with 2 officers to get free, then run, then supposedly draw a weapon. He could have just moved away from the club that officers had been called to over 200 times this year (that was not an exaggerated number). This guy was un-employed, lived with his mom, had a 5 year old, dealing drugs, not paying child support, sound like someone you want to live next door? I think not. What about this officer? He is now coping with the fact that he killed a man. He is playing the event over and over in his mind, and this will haunt him for the rest of his life. Was he wrong in shooting a cop assaulting drug dealer? Maybe, we will see when the investigation is complete. I think the minority community is just eager to jump on the majority any chance it can get. For god sakes the only picture the family could find to show was his senior year book photo, not a photo of this “loving father” with his son, or with the rest of the family, or with friends, just a single photo that is several years old. The fact is that he is on video assaulting an officer. So if he had not been shot and killed, he would be in jail right now waiting to go to our already over crowded prisons where his skills as a criminal would only be enhanced. Then the lifestyle he had chosen would have probably gotten him killed shortly after he was released. Maybe he could have robbed your house next. Then what would your opinion be? (he had been previously convicted of robbery multiple times)

Oh Dylan. Isn't there something shiny for you to look at? The grown-ups are trying to talk here.
