Free STD testing in East Austin
Residents of East Austin are being offered free testing for sexually transmitted diseases at an event today featuring hip-hop artists, break-dancing, $500 in poetry slam prizes and refreshments. "Sexperts," who will offer advice on sexually transmitted diseases, testing and other questions, will also be available.
The event, which is aimed at minority youths, is from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Off Center at 2211-A Hidalgo St. It is sponsored by the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department's Family Health Program.
"Teenage girls have the highest rates of gonorrhea in the state, and we want them — and anyone who is sexually active — to know how to protect themselves and where to get tested," said Danielle Granderson, spokeswoman for the event. "There's going to be discussions on abstinence" as well, she said.
Granderson said she didn't think the event would will be controversial.
"If you're going to be sexually active, you need to know all of the information that goes with that," she said.
