College Exit Exams?

Governor Perry is announcing a new incentive plan for the state's universities. They'll get a cash reward for improving their graduation rate and to make it extra hard, he thinks they ought to have to pass a test to graduate. We aren't education policy wonks, but we did just barely graduate so we have a knee-jerk reaction to this proposal.

The fact that you pass your classes means you graduate. Even though it has been a while since I graduated, I would bet you my liver in a frying pan that college professors do not just give out a passing grade because you're cute or charming. If so, I would have graduated much earlier than I did.

We'd like to see elected officials have to pass a test before they can govern. That's a test we could proctor the hell out of.

a student would have to pass the test in order to graduate.

can you read? at February 1, 2007 11:26 AM

"a student would have to pass the test in order to graduate." That is what Pd's post says. Since you are so stupid, the point of the post is that passing classes at the college level is already a rigorous enough standard and there is no need for a test.

Besides that, what will the test include? Reading, writing, and arithmetic? What about fine arts majors? What about engineering majors (they never read and cant write a cohorent paragraph to save their lives)? The whole idea is stupid is simply based on conservatoves' views that educators are worthless and should be run like a business. You know, like Enron.

No--can you read??? at February 1, 2007 11:44 AM

should have read... " a student would NOT haave to pass the test in order to graduate."

my bad at February 1, 2007 12:08 PM

don't have to pass the test to graduate according to the plan. Not a high stakes test. Does verify how many of a school's graduates actually learned enough to be proficient in their field.

How about passing a test to post on this site. Is it tard day?
I can think of two dozen legislators right off the bat that wouldn't run if they had to pass anything other than a piss test to govern.
We could call it the Crownover test. If you're as dumb or dumber than Myra Crownover, you can't run.

Hey the exit exams do not affect the graduation of a student but rather provide a baseline of how well each college does in teaching the major in question. Then parents and students could tell which college offers the best program for their chosen field of student. Better info for consumers and puts colleges on notice to have prepared their students better. No more free rides.

just the facts at February 1, 2007 3:57 PM

If the student has nothing riding on the exit exam, most will come in drunk and write a long essay on the unusual mating habits of legislators. I know I would.

If the goal is for schools to improve why not have the teachers take an exam once a year? Make the results public. First prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired. You get the gist.

I've got a better idea, how about showing the door to TAs that can't be understood, nothing funner than taking math, stats and economic classes from foreigners that no speaky English
