Why I Took The Speaker's Race Personally.

First, and most obviously it is because I hate Tom Craddick. I don't know him, but here's what I think of him. I think Craddick is a bully. I think he uses his power to do more harm than good....or good for a few but not the whole. I believe he's too partisan and that's bad for Texas.

Maybe not so obvious is that I hope for a better Texas. I hope for a Texas with people that will cooperate and put Texans ahead of party and behind closed door business deals. No matter how cynical I can get about politics I guess, at heart, I still have a little of that Anne Frank mentality in me that in spite of everything I still believe there's good in people. And then, the Legislature convenes and I remember what a bunch of pricks they are.

I feel like my dog got ran over. They all suck. Except Senfronia.

Sabestian at January 9, 2007 10:16 PM

Well, take heart. Even in Midland, Craddick gets his way. On the Midland local news tonight (right after the Craddick victory speech), the city council voted in favor of the building of a highly disputed (by the neighboring homeowners) apartment complex. The city council finally bent (after three tries) to the will of; who else? Tom Craddick.
He owns the land the new apartments will now sit on - despite the cries of the very people that elected him. He did not make many friends in Midland today – ironically.

As a Midlander, in my opinion, Craddick is a selfish, conceded and evil little man. One day he will get his - as will the other trolls that follow him.

gayinmidland at January 9, 2007 10:20 PM

PInk Dome's revised enemies list:

1. Tom Craddick
2. Donald Rumsfeld
3. The "ex"
4. The bastard employees at Piggly Wiggly that tried to usurp his power as head bag boy.

anon at January 9, 2007 10:25 PM

Did you hear the opening prayer, by the archbishop of Austin? He prayed that our legislators would work for the common good. I almost cried when he proceeded to quote Micah 6:8, knowing that our legislators won't ever do much about justice or mercy, and that 99% of them know nothing about humility. Sigh.

anon at January 9, 2007 11:09 PM

Re: anon

Jesus would've certainly endorsed Craddick. After all, nothing is more Christian than balancing Caesar's budget on the backs of the working poor and the infirm.

Just look at the surplus we have to spend on property tax cuts! (And please pay no attention to the least among us huddled in the corner. It's impolite to stare. We must keep up our country club manners.)

Matthew 7:12 and 22:39 have always been favorites of mine... and they couldn't be more diametrically opposed to the way our state is being governed.

TGOSH at January 9, 2007 11:30 PM

wow...how queer.

Anonymous at January 10, 2007 1:25 AM

I think you nailed it. They are a bunch of pricks. And bullies. Complete sell-outs to corporate special interests and big money contributors.

And they are arrogant, too. My own state rep and senator, Republicans of course, don't even bother to acknowledge letters from voting constituents.

Assholes.

Dennis at January 10, 2007 7:54 AM

Does anyone else think Craddick sounds like Ed Sullivan. Really big show.

edunat at January 10, 2007 9:12 AM

Pitts is a coward. Even if he lost, why not see the race to the end?

PanzerDSS at January 10, 2007 10:10 AM

In all fairness to Craddick, he may have made some friends who would like to live in an apartment whose location isn't consigned to some shabby part of town so as not to upset the local landed gentry.

Be fair. Nothing about the proposed location of the apartment complex is inconsistent with the City of Midland's Master Plan.

The "cries of the very people who elected him" that you invoke is, in reality, the horsey set who doesn't want.....shudder...apartment dwellers within two miles of them.

Natalie at January 10, 2007 10:10 AM

I have to call Pinkdome out on this one. Pitts was not brave, a brave man doesn't seek the cover of a hidden vote, and he doesn't run and hide when he doesn't get his way.

Add to that, all of his supporters are also shameful cowards.

Politically speaking, if they had the votes to unseat Craddick they shouldn't have needed nor wanted a secret vote.

Am I glad Pitts ran, yes, did that take guts, yes, but he lost it all when the rubber hit the road and he dropped out. Its not entirely his fault. Sometimes Evil is too strong for small men and women to stand up to.

Congrats to all Reps that voted against Craddick.

BacchusXY at January 10, 2007 10:34 AM

They are pricks and wannabe pricks, er, prickettes.

Jesus B. Ochoa at January 10, 2007 10:47 AM

C'mon? Evil?

You are stretching the meaning of words so much that they mean nothing at all anymore.

Natalie at January 10, 2007 11:29 AM

Hey Nat,
Your glass is half full attitude is really neato. Got news for you dear, nobody wants to have an apartment building (no matter how nice) built next to their house, unless of course they live in a crack house. Also, people that live in houses vote, people that live in apts. don't, generally.
Craddick's "rhyming and stealing" is starting to rival his asshole hero Delay's. Good luck to the GOP with that.

Sand and Wal-Marts no doubt.

johnjagg at January 10, 2007 12:23 PM

You are correct when you say that nobody wants to have an apartment building built next to their house.

The problem with you argument is that nobody, in fact, will. Anyone that has a house next to this particular complex will have to begin construction right now.

There are no houses within 1000' of the proposed site. (Source: http://www.zwire.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=17607807&BRD=2288&PAG=461&dept_id=475626&rfi=8)

Your facts are half known attitude ain't so neato.

If you want to hate any Craddick move...fine. But do yourself a favor and find a subject that you know the first (correct) thing about.

Natalie at January 10, 2007 1:19 PM

Re: "Sand and Wal-Marts"

I guess it is Bush's fault that only the rich can afford to shop at Whole Foods.

Natalie at January 10, 2007 1:21 PM

Nat,
Sorry I didn't brush up on the Midland P&Z code before I engaged. Of course who actually gives a crap about anything that has to do with Midland sans the Tuscan Raiders that dwell in that shit hole.
I guess it would have been more accurate to say that nobody that lives in a house wants an apt. building within 2 miles (your words) near their house. Now pull the stick out of your ass before you come back here.

anon at January 10, 2007 1:43 PM

Wouldn't you think that before you essentially proclaim that the apartment complex deal was a total railroad job that completely deviates from normal P&Z procedures and past approvals (because Craddick was involved, you see!) it might have been a good idea to...you know...know what those procedures are?

It is obvious that you don't feel the need to brush up on much of anything.

I would think that on such a *cough* progressive site such as this one it would be considered at least humourous that apartments are going in "next door" to the rich and powerful.

I guess you guys think as much of the apartment dwelling social class as those rich, white, Rethuglicans do.

That nerdy ability to include web addresses to support your arguments.
And that fat girl's name have just about got me hooked.
Now, which part of the state goverment do you work in again?
You're annoying manner is really starting to grow on me.
Please stay.

anon at January 10, 2007 6:18 PM

Hey Anon 6:18 -

Are you thinking of Natalie as in the Facts of Life?

And Nat, if you can name us something that both parties would consider productive that Craddick has accomplished, then I am sure that several of us would consider revising our one-note function box. Some examples would be a comprehensive water plan, children's health insurance, retired teacher multiplier increase, you know, that kind of thing. That Laney did.

Waxahachie Prom Queen at January 10, 2007 8:59 PM

One hopes that sometime, somehow, that EVIL bastard Craddick will be indicted like his bosom buddy DeLay for assorted felonies, real or imagined.

First, and most obviously it is because I hate Tom Craddick, because he is a Republican. I don't know him, but here's what I think of him. I think Craddick is a bully because he is a Republican. See, you scared off Natalie. She is a Republican, after all.

Waxahachie Prom Queen at January 11, 2007 8:29 PM

Snrub, don't confuse my dislike of Craddick with a love of Democrats. Democrats can and are just as idiotic, asshole'ish, and bitterly partisan. HOWEVER, they are not in power in Texas and are not the ones that are ramming bad legislation down our throats.

If (and when) they do...you'll hear about it from me. Your assumptions about my blind allegiance to the Dems is WAY OFF.

If you have any proof that Tom Craddick is not a petty prick of a man, please...by all means, let me know.

Pinkdome at January 11, 2007 10:29 PM

Hey gang,
I just printed off and wiped my ass with snrub's "Ode to the Democrats" speech. Felt pretty damn good too.

Question, snrub: if your fucking party is so vertuous and true, then why were individuals belonging to it the ones that ensured Craddick's return to power?
