I love to push buttons. It's much easier to do with Austin liberals than with anybody else I know. Tonight at dinner I upset quite a few with my declaration that should tear down Las Manitas or whatever it is and build a Marriott. You would think I had suggested that we eat their first born child. Later, they discussed what it meant to the community. My response? Well, maybe they can all find jobs at the Marriott!
Another way to get liberals fired up? Dismiss everything they say with "But, they're poor so it doesn't matter." Then, all you have to do is sit back and watch. It's great fun. Try it this holiday with your own family. I guarantee it will get you out of many conversations you'd rather not have anyway.
Yes, it is just a mexican restaurant. People are kicking up a lot of fuss over one restaurant.
On the other hand, we've already got, what, 5 Marriotts in Austin as it is? Do we really need another that badly?
Is it bad that I don't even like Las Manitas?
Cody- you aren't alone.
pffft - good point. Especially when it comes to the AWFUL shit that normally passes for food at a Marriott.
I'm just sayin', Paco's Tacos plate is one of the few things that brings me joy. You're not going to take that away from a depressed cripple, are you?
^yes. Fact is, economics demand more hotel rooms in the city center. Austin loses out on convention business b/c of the lack of rooms downtown. Conventions bring more money to the city than a small restaurant can in ten years. Plus jobs!!
Put it in perspective, Pinkdome. How would you feel if they tore down the Bar at Stephen F?
Las Manitas is my FAV revolution-plotting spot (especially on Wednesdays when they have gorditas)
Um the Bar at the Stephen F is in a hotel, we need more of them not less. And to use Pinkdome's line of logic, rich people drink at the Stephen F, so it can't be torn down silly.
These pissy ass liberals need to get a grip, Pinkdome is completely correct.
TEAR IT DOWN.
Now they want it to be declared a landmark. Why? It's a dumpy ass building with a ratty ass tex mex restaurant in it. That makes damn near every rat hole and strip center throughout most of the southwest a flippin' landmark. Tear the sumbitch down already. If they are so enamored of that location, maybe the marriott will let them put their restaurant in their new hotel. That would be a new concept - edible hotel food.
