UT is considering taking down statues that celebrate "heroes of the Confederacy", I read on Austinist. Is it worth it to take down statues of Confederate generals on the UT grounds? Or are these statues part of the University's history?
Basically, I remain ambivalent about the issue. What do you think? Read the post and let us know.
I don't care what they do with the statues but if they take away my state holiday on January 19 (Confederate Heroes Day) I'm gonna be severely pissed off.
Texas was a Confederate State. Its history. Deal with it. Now, that postmaster Reagan statue offends me...melt it down and make a statue to the one true Saint of Texas higher education...Santa Rita #1.
I think it's good for society to keep reminders of things from the past that now embarrass us. We shouldn't forget that the future will probably judge us in a completely different light than the one in which we see things now.
There already is a monument to Santa Rita #1, it just needs to be moved to the center of campus.
K, you're the embarrassment
Leave my campus the fuck alone.
If you want to make the point that Texas has moved beyond its racist past how bout we elect Democrats, repeal the anti-gay marriage amendment, and pay for old folks and kids to have healthcare.
What guilt in your life makes you see those statutes and think about racism?
I spent four years at UT and I never once thought about those damn statutes. Apart from the bullet hole in George, and the fact that it looks like he's stroking it I never looked at them, and I bet most people don't.
Asuage your guilt by being productive and making a different not moving some old crap around.

Oh, removing them would violate history. As part of an overall artistic reassessment., they should merely be repositioned. Robert E. Lee would be a contemplative prsence in the NE corder of the third level of the Trinity parking facilty.
