Give me toll roads or give me death

We, for one, were looking forward to the opening of the Central Texas Turnpike toll roads today. Suddenly, our commute to the hinterlands looks like we'll be zooming along with the other elitists that will be able to afford to pay for the pleasure of driving in traffic to the Dell building.

We think it's quite nice of the state to allow people to drive on them for free until January, but we're upset we'll have to share this expensive road with poor people who won't appreciate them.

I'm all for the toll roads. Let's act like a real city since we are one.

P.S. Kerry really didn't help things. Some folks just don't get PR.

Yeah, the national level Dems always have been giant pussies. Shoulda realized they'd fumble the ball.

Did anyone else see the news reports on the toll roads last night? They were broadcasting from an over pass, and in the background, the traffic was bumper-to-bumper! WTF is that all about? I thought these wonderful roads were going to save us from eternal congestion.

Didn't John Kerry already lose one election for the Democrats? What is it about that guy? Is he another Texas Trial Lawyers candidate? Oh, that's right. The Texas Trial Lawyers support Republicans-turned-Independents now. I forgot.

Toll roads: yet another way to increase private profits, enrich campaign contributors and other cronies, and screw the public at large.

Charles Kuffner, a houston blogger, has done some numbers on the cost of tolls vs. the cost of increasing the gas tax. The bottom line: you end up paying a lot more in tolls than you ever would in increased gas taxes.

Yes, the roads have to be paid for in some way, but tolls are the worst and most expensive way to do it.

I know, why don't you drive through the neighborhoods. Pay the toll. It's our price for being so anti the inevitable growth that took place. We need to collectively grow up.
