The Statesman has an article on how sex scandals can test the faith of parishoners. First, the serious part. When leaders (be they Christian or secular) let us down or shock us it does shake us. It reminds us that everyone is human and makes tremendous mistakes in judgement, and in character. It reminds us that our faith is not and should not be tied to a person, but to God. Nothing man does can cause me to waiver in my beliefs. What it can do is remind me of human frailty.
Now for the PinkDome part.
When our leaders teach us to hate the sinner instead of the sin and to become intolerant of imperfection, none of us have anywhere to go when our humanity is exposed. If church leaders would spend more time preaching about God's grace and the power and serenity that comes with Faith, we would be better off as Christians, as people and as a country. Until that time, we will revel in every fall, every slip, every crystal meth fueled gay hooker sex scandal that comes our way. People are not perfect, only God is perfect. The more we embrace the differences in people as a whole, the more we'll forgive them for sticking it in someone's hole.
Well, bless you, PD. Thoughtful, truthful and right on. Kudos.
