Libertarians: We Can Be Republicans

With no Republican on the ballot for CD-22, it seems the Libertarian in the race, Bob Smither, smells some blood. He's announced (word doc) that he's willing to act like a Republican. From his press release:

It appears at this point that Republicans may lose the majority in the House. If this
occurs, a vote for liberal Democrat Nick Lampson will be a vote for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House.
I am a Libertarian, and I firmly subscribe to the Libertarian ideals of small government,
individual liberty, and personal responsibility, but I have decided that if elected I will vote for a Republican Speaker of the House.

Umm, I don't get it. Those two things don't go together. If Dems win the House and Smither is elected, he won't have the opportunity to vote for a Republican Speaker of the House. Also, I'm not so sure Pelosi would be the Speaker. At any rate, that's typical Libertarian speak for ya. They say pretty sounding things that don't make any sense at all. I don't mind Libertarians, I've voted for a few that were on the ballot against unpalatable Repubs. But I don't get this whole trying to be the default Republican thing. You're a Libertarian? Then be a Libertarian and run your crazy nutter campaign. Don't copy and paste Delay's attack rhetoric on Lampson into a press release and act like a Republican.

Well, it worked. Smither had his candidacy mentioned in Kristen Mack's piece in today's Chron, making it ok for Republicans to support a Libertarian - as if they had a real choice other than staying home. Ms Mack forgot to mention, of course, that Smither himself says he probably won't get a chance to vote for a Speaker because he expects the Democrats to take back the House. Details, details.

Hmmmm......we'll see. If you do not understand how the Speaker is elected, you should not state with such confidence a view that has no basis in reality or fact. Lampson is a liberal who voted to saddled every man, woman and child with $4200 of debt his last year in office. Good luck with that voting record.
