Here we go again. President Bush is deflecting attention from his spectacular failures in domestic and foreign policy by stirring up the bigots and ignorants with his proposed ban on gay marriage. That's right, gays are the biggest threat to the American way of life. It should be really on the top of the agenda right now. CNN's front page graced us with this photo in front of a church.

Really? Jesus actually said that and right there in Matthew 19:4-6? Let me do a quick Bible drill! and find the verse for us.
"And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,'5 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."
So, that translation is very loosely interpreted by the hate-baiters. I made my own sign from Church Sign Generator. LOVE This site. You can go there and make your own. Email your best and we'll post them in a photo gallery.

"Anonymous" (you brave man making such a brave post), I don't know anyone under 35 who thinks being gay is evil. I don't know anyone who has had Biology 101 who thinks being gay is a "lifestyle" choice as opposed to a biological fact. But, then, I suppose you don't like science, or logic, for a number of reasons. BTW, forty years ago people thought inter-racial marriage was evil. . .maybe you still do? I think your stats, like a lot of political stats, cover the same demographic as AARP. As for bigots, sometimes we have to wait for a whole generation to die off.
I think gays should be able to get married... why should heteros be the only miserable ones!
The passage from that sign has no mention of homosexuality but was dealing with the subject of divorce.
Gayinmidland - you're right the Bible does include those verses. And the majority of Chrisitans probably don't have the cajones or knowledge of scripture to defend their beliefs and position on gay marriage when confronted with your reasoning. But here's where you're wrong:
I'm going to presume from your previous posts you understand the importance of contextualism. You wouldn't evaluate on section of a bill by itself and expect to gain a full insight as to its meaning without also considering the rest of the document. So let's look at the Bible for a second as a historical document, written 2000+ years ago.
The Old Testament serves two purposes: 1) to provide for dietary and cultural preservation and 2) so the Israelites, God's chosen, had a baseline for showing their devotion to Him. Yeah, it sounds pretty extreme to me too - putting someone to death for violating any of those laws you so deftly quoted from The West Wing.
Now at this point I imagine you're saying that I'm picking and choosing what part of the Bible is "really real" and what's not "really real." But I'm not about to fold like a deck of cards to your assertion that the rest of the Bible is moot, or any scripture dealing with hu because "uh oh, the Bible is too hard to understand and I can't personally reconcile it with what I already believe to be Truth.
Either you have the maturity to defend your beliefs and know why you believe what you believe or you don't - and I'll concede unfortunately there's not enough spiritually mature and scripturally knowledgeable Christians these days and too many who get clumped into the Westboro "Baptist" Church group by people like yourself.
A person isn't more deserving to go to hell for "being gay" anymore than anyone else - myself included - for failing to live up to Christ's example as a perfect sacrifice. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. I'm going to presume again from many of your previous posts that you know the theology well enough and understand the core concepts of salvation, like in Romans 10:9-13, "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved..."
Brother, you may even be a fellow believer. Christ's death and resurrection is God's new covenant with us - no more are we condemned to death for failing to live up to Levitical and Old Testment Law. But the scriptural examples you use to "refute" homosexuality aren't even on that topic.
So how can the Church's position on homosexuality still be applicable yet other parts not? The Bible serves as our life manual from God, instructing us how to live, how to love, how to share with others about Him. I understand what you have to say about hypocricy; I apologize because indeed, the Church is made of sinners and isn't perfect. (Tangentially I wonder if anybody wouldn't be quicker to accept Christ if it wasn't for the Christians). God's moral laws are still applicable and marriage is the prototype for our relationship with Him.
2 Corinthians 11:2 says "I am jealous for you with a Godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him." The construct of marriage between one man a woman then, particularly what Matthew 19:4-6 says, gives greater relevancy to God's love for us and his desire to consume our heart. So then, any physically intimate relationship outside marriage is really cheating God of what's rightfully his, or at least what he's longing for - a pure relationship with him.
I won't insult you by overlooking the clear partisan politics behind this latest move to bring it to a vote in the Senate. The "ickiness" of homosexuality makes for a good rally, good talking points and good voter turnout for Republicans. But it's bad for the church and no, I don't think Jesus would be leading the charge to vote for it.
Don't confuse bad politics with bad religion. It's not just about being gay. It's about our hearts.
notoverthehill-
Please understand I was not purposfully trying to withold my identity. Also, I do not think gay individuals are evil, and I could care less if it is a life style choice or the way they were born. Either way is fine by me.
I was simply trying to convey my thoughts as to how incorrect it is to say that only bigots and dumb people are against gay marriage when 3 out of 4 Texans dissapproved of the idea in a public election (which is also the demographic I referenced in yesterday's post).
Face the facts, the support for a gay marriage movement is not there, and just becuase others disagree doesn't mean they are nothing more than bigots.
I will leave you with a quote from a gay friend of mine:
"Gay Marriage? Why would gays ever want to get married? That is such a hetrosexual thing to do."
So here is my new sign, "Jesus says: Gay Men Can Be Born Gay. Accept It. Matthew 19:12."
Mathew 19:12 For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother's womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it."
Eunuch:
3. An unmasculine man.
HAHAHAHA ... your photo is hillarious!
Man, this server is so much faster now! That IT guy is good!!!!
I guess then in Texas the bigots and ignorants outnumber the progressive thinkers 3 - 1?
Sucks when the stats once again prove that dems. are the ones actually out of touch.
Has anyone else noticed that the devil is f-ing with our posts today and listing the date as 6/6/06? Its 06/05/2006.
You have to see this http://gay-gop.cf.huffingtonpost.com/ SO FUNNY
Since the "Christians" are throwing around Bible versus today about the evils of homosexuality, I thought I would add some to the mix.
Exodus 35:2 says Sabbath breakers should be put to death. Leviticus 19:27-28 says trimming your hair or beard or having a tattoo deserves death.
Leviticus 25:44 says I may own slaves if bought them from a neighbor nation. Exodus 21:7 says I may sell my daughter into slavery. Leviticus 11:10 says to kill anyone eating shellfish or fish without fins or scales.
Leviticus 19:19 says to kill farmers planting two different crops in the same field, or breeding two different kinds of cattle together or anyone wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester).
Additionally, most of the major protestant religions teach there are "no degrees to sin". However, many (Baptists in particular) make homosexuality the sin to end all sins while blatantly ignoring all the Bible verses above. Hypocrites.
