How do you know elections are coming soon?

Gay marriage!

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-8 to approve a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. So not only did Senators move one step closer toward writing discrimination into the Constitution, but they also acted like 9-year olds:

"I don't need to be lectured by you. You are no more a protector of the Constitution than am I," Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., shouted after Sen. Russ Feingold declared his opposition to the amendment, his affinity for the Constitution and his intention to leave the meeting.

"If you want to leave, good riddance," Specter finished.

"I've enjoyed your lecture, too, Mr. Chairman," replied Feingold, D-Wis., who is considering a run for president in 2008. "See ya."

Ahh, election season, where fear-mongering is almost as common as baby eating. Only this time, you'll be just as scared of illegal immigrants as gays. Can you imagine if a mass influx of gay Mexicans happened? Holy shit, the right's collective heads would explode.

PD Adds: Here's what I think is illogical. Senator Specter and other Republicans use this logic all the time: Specter said he is "totally opposed" to it, but felt it deserved a debate in the Senate. Okay, so you are a committee chariman, you know something is a bad idea, you know it won't pass, you know you are totally opposed to it...if all of that is true then isn't it your position to kill it in committee? The entire Senate doesn't need to expend energy on it, that's why you exist...to expedite and make sure stuff the whole Senate does need to work on gets there. This is why it's pure hate-politics in action. Pandering to the lowest common demoninator.

Sure. Arlen doesn't need to be lectured by anyone, or even informed of someone else's (god forbid) opinion.

He knows eeeeverything.

Specter would never pander to the lowest common denominator . . .*cough* hill/thomas hearings *cough*

Haha, gay Mexicans :) That would certainly do the trick! How about liberal atheist pro-choice lesbian Mexicans? Insert burly-woman-field-laborer joke here.

BTW I referenced your quote on my blog to help lighten the mood of my dour post on immigration:

Ever wondered what the empty spot pointed at Wonk's head stands for? The empty spot that is Wonk's head.
