A day without good Tex-Mex food

Yesterday was "A Day Without Immigrants". A large number of citizens and immigrants protested against proposed immigration law changes by skipping work and taking to the streets. We watched the local news last night (yes, ugh) to see their coverage. One of the news stories showed how people were upset that some of the Taco Shack locations were closed, and the camera focused on a note on the ground saying, "Dear Taco Shack, you have lost my business" or something cheesy like that. A friend of ours who works in a restaurant (non-Tex-Mex) said that last night the managers had to pitch in in the kitchen because most of the kitchen-workers hadn't come in.

And that was the whole point of the protest, wasn't it? Could we survive a day without the contributions of immigrants? Certainly it was only one day, and that might not be enough to gauge the effects, but it seems to us we wouldn't get much done without them. Of course, we knew that without needing a "day without" them to prove it.

We wouldn't get much done without them?

lol

Nothing happened....

Wonk [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 2, 2006 9:29 AM

Wonk--try pulling your head out of your ass and open your eyes to the reality of what would happen if we kicked out all 11 milloin. No dishwashers, people picking fruit and vegetables, mowing lawns, cleaning hotel rooms, etc. Sheesh--how can someone be so blind?

UT_guy at May 2, 2006 9:39 AM

Wonk's forgetting his time in the food service industry and the pervasiveness immigrant labor.

He's also got something like 20/240 vision so that blind crack hit a lot closer to home than you might think.

Did this day without aliens affect your life?

I bet you didn't notice a damn thing.

I didn't...

Wonk [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 2, 2006 10:42 AM

yeah, we had people out in SoCal who drove up to LA. They took a 'vacation day' but no one would have fired them anyway.

original TREY at May 2, 2006 11:07 AM

Apparently you weren't on I-35 at 5:00 when downtown was immobilized and the exit ramps were backed up onto the highway. However, the morning commute was lovely.

hyped on coffee at May 2, 2006 11:07 AM

I'm talking about this supposed economic impact. It was zero.

And I was on 35-south and 5:00 my commute the the Marcos was no different.

Wonk [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 2, 2006 11:12 AM

By all accounts, the effects were a mixed bag. Some businesses weren't affected while others were hit hard. It seems to me that a prolonged action (weeks) would hurt the economy.

(Oh yes, the commute was lovely!)
