Sunday News Round Up

Bell, Strayhorn and Friedman all spoke at the Association of Texas Professional Educators' annual convention. Bell and Strayhorn played a game of auctioneer in trying to out-do the other's proposed teacher pay raise, Strayhorn vowed to veto any education reform even mentioning the word 'voucher' and Friedman said teachers were his heroes. Is it Ageism? The GOP Runoff for the Court of Criminal Appeals pits Charles Holcomb and Terry Keel in a battle royale. If Holcomb wins he won't be able to serve out his term because he's 72 now and judges have to retire at age 75. Keel was heard to say, "That old man keeps ruining it for everybody else." [Chron]

The 1965 Voter Rights Act has sections that are set to expire in August. The fears of it not being renewed are stirring up memories of the Edmund Pettus Bridge and more recent perceived injustices in the protection of minority voters. [SAXN]

The Evangelicals are still crying out the old "we're being persecuted" baloney and threaten the Republican party with losing their votes if the GOP doesn't do something about the evil threats of the gays, the abortionists and the ACLU. It's about time the GOP leaders stop courting these whackos and let them stay home. They are not going to stop until they have a theocracy run by a Southern Baptist controlling every aspect of the government and people's personal, private lives. Fascinating read, Good work [DMN].

Seven of the nation's most experienced emergency management leaders have turned down the top job at FEMA. They all say the same thing, the administration and Congress have not shown any willingness to give the FEMA chief authority to fix the problems and the person that accepts the job is clearly set up to fail...and then be humiliated and run out of town. OUCH. If that's not an indictment of our preparedness almost a year after Katrina, I don't know what is. [NYTimes]

If the right wing christians left the republican party - where would they go? Back to the democrats? It's an empty threat, but no republican has the cajones to call their bluff.

That's the thing... the dirty little secret of the Republican party is that they need the cash 'beatin' the drums for Jesus' raises. Without the money that trickles in from mobile home parks all over the south, the GOP would be up shit creek.

It's not just the votes, though that certainly helps. Watch for a delinking between church/party as the economy goes south.

Your constant attack son Chrisitan's is pathetics at least one a week you blame them for something.

You only perpuate the idea that libs hate Christians. and in the process all you do is marginalize yourselves

It is also 100% incorrect. Why do you think D's want to keep the individual caps on contributions as low as they can? It's because they get whipped raising money at those levels. Howard Dean was the one raising money from people donating $32.11 on their credit cards, which they're probably still trying to pay off.
