Reasons for DeLay's quitting the race when he did

1) Perhaps he thought he would eventually be beat by the Dem?

2) He decided that it was time to bow out gracefu-- okay, we can't write this with a straight face.

3) Or most likely, as the WaPo mentions:

DeLay also is entitled under federal election rules to convert any or all of the remaining funds from his reelection campaign to his legal expenses, whether or not he resigns, is indicted or loses the election. Election lawyers say one advantage of bowing out of the election now is that the campaign cash can be converted to pay legal bills immediately, instead of being drained in the course of a bid to stay in office.

There you go. Any more ideas?

Sounds like door #3.

James at April 4, 2006 9:38 AM

I'm sure it's a combination of #3 and the fact that the federal investigation is now beating down his door.

Fine Bottled Water at April 4, 2006 9:58 AM

Umm, because he wasn't going to get re-elected and the Republicans are going to need every seat they can get.

Also, he is going to go on to make many more millions as a lobbyist, so either way we're screwed.

Politics as normal:

http://hammeroftruth.com/2006/04/04/politics-as-normal/

Mike N. at April 4, 2006 10:07 AM

Whatever DeLay's failings, he will probably win his legal battle and a new Republican will take that seat in November. Y'all can keep ranting about DeLay, but it's kind of irrelevant now.

newswatching at April 4, 2006 10:51 AM

-Spend more time with his family??

genevieve at April 4, 2006 11:12 AM

It's hardly irrelevant. Ethics matters. You can say all you want to now, but Tom Delay's lack of ethics cost him his job, one way or another. Democrats were here from the beginning. The Republicans can run as quickly as they want to the "we got rid of him because he was ethically challenged" center, but they're not going to find traction. TX-22 is a tough place for Democrat to win. But the debate is greater than just whether or not Nick Lampson can or will win. Ethics Matters. We Won the battle. However, there is a much larger political war to fight over the corruption that Tom Delay leaves behind. Do you trust that battle against corruption to another crony of Tom Delay?

Cody at April 4, 2006 11:13 AM

Cody,

If you think that the Democrats aren't just as corrupt as the Republicans, then you are in for a huge surprise once you pull your head out of your ass.

Mike N. at April 4, 2006 11:42 AM

Mike N.:

Good morning. I agree with you, to an extent. There are a lot of corrupt Democrats. There are a lot of really nice Republicans. The only time that I mentioned "Democrats" in that post was saying that it would be tough to win as a Dem in TX -22.

I've worked in the US and State Capitols, so I am keenly aware of the situation. But dont' think for a minute that Delay's resignation isn't a win for anyone that wants corruption out of politics.

Democrats don't hold a monopoloy on being decidely against ethics scandals. Democrats shouldn't have to campaign on this, because both sides should be combatting it. However, the Republican Party was silent on this issue for too long and because of that, all Republicans are going to have to rebuild that trust. Are Democrats the answer? I don't know. But I am positive that a huge turnover is required for any kind of change to happen.

I do think that the Republicans are more corrupt than the Democrats right now. I don't think that's an absolute. But I do think that's what power does to you. But we do need to fight to make it better, and Delay's resignatin is a start.

Thanks for your input, though. I appreciate your time.

Sincerely,
Cody

Cody at April 4, 2006 12:00 PM

I would also add that it is the Republicans who are the speakers of "morality", "God" and the "moral fabric of America". The Republicans have joined Christianity with politics. So when there is corruption, it looks much worse with the "moral" Republicans than with the Dems.

gayinmidland at April 4, 2006 12:21 PM

Or possibly he was bribed by his own party to step down, drawing attention away from their ethics troubles. If they offered to cover his legal expenses, how could he say no? Furthermore, like the big GOP donors paying Libby's legal expenses, they intend to use Delay as a firewall. They're terrified of what would happen if he squeals as loudly as Abramoff did.

What remaining election funds? Friday was also the deadline for candidates' Q1 federal funding reports. Delay's fundingraising has reportedly been lagging.

JUICE at April 4, 2006 1:16 PM

You asshole Wonk. This is what your corrupt and mentally challanged leader said last week at a Christianist conference in Washington DC:

"Sides are being chosen, and the future of man hangs in the balance! The enemies of virtue may be on the march, but they have not won, and if we put our trust in Christ, they never will ... It is for us then to do as our heroes have always done and put our faith in the perfect redeeming love of Jesus Christ."

I guess you love this shit Wonk - you and your Christian Theocracy weirdos. Take your cross and shove it Mr. Delay and Wonk too.

gayinmidland at April 4, 2006 2:13 PM

Yes I love to make fun of Christian haters such as yourself. You try to pawn your self off as open minded yet your harbor more anger than the nuttiest Christian.

I'm not even that relgious nor ever espoused myself to be so. You just assume because I attack your 3rd grade arguments.

Good Lord. Can we get back on topic? Puhleeze?

bluebonnet at April 4, 2006 3:50 PM

I thought I was on topic. RE: the Jesus statement by DeLay above. It's the same for all Christianist like him - he can do no wrong. Trust me - people like DeLay, Bush, Craddick & Wonk are all the same. Since God speaks to them, they are always right - and very, very dangerous.

gayinmidland at April 4, 2006 4:35 PM

New e-mail from Lampson:

Dear -,

As many of you may have heard, last night Rep. Tom DeLay announced he would not seek re-election.

From day one, I have been running this race because Southeast Texans need a congressman who will make headlines for the right reasons. I have spent the past several weeks talking to voters about my vision for stronger homeland security, plans to provide for NASA and cutting our massive debt and deficit. I will continue to push these issues from now until November.

I will continue traveling the district talking about important issues and laying out my plans to bring Texas values back to the 22nd congressional district. Because of you, we will have the support we need to run a formidable campaign, no matter who I face in the general election.

I urge you to volunteer for our campaign. And I urge you to help us grow our grassroots team, and invite your friends to join our team.

The voters of this district have made it clear they are ready for a change. I am going to work hard to reach out to each and every one of them. I'm grateful for the support I have gotten so far, and my campaign is only getting stronger. We are going to win this race.

Sincerely,

Nick Lampson
