Oh Good Grief

For some reason Rick Perry's camp is feeding rumors about presidential aspirations in 2008. The AP ran an article chock full of bullshit from Perry's folks.

With numbers in the 30s in Texas, I can't even seem to fathom how Perry himself thinks he's got a shot for president, let alone why the MSM keeps feeding the fire. What has that ass-hat done in his 6 years as governor other than manage to get elected as a Republican in a Republican state?

Well, there is the hair. There has to be some accomplishment in you hair being the thing you are most known for - if you're a man.

hyped on coffee at April 3, 2006 12:47 PM

People said that about Bush. Oh good god no.

Pink Lady at April 3, 2006 12:49 PM

True, PL, but Bush had that whole daddy-was-President thing going for him.

Fine Bottled Water at April 3, 2006 1:20 PM

Even as a conservative, I will admit I think the Republican party should look from a state other than Texas for its nominee.

How about to the North of Texas...

Mike Huckabee anyone?

Right of Texas at April 3, 2006 2:03 PM

Perry's approval rating is in the 30's?

Wonk [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 3, 2006 2:08 PM

I know, Wonk - I can't believe it's that high either.

jd0505 at April 3, 2006 2:08 PM

Didn't he get Russell Crowe's shitty band to play his daughter's birthday? And.. and.. [feh]

norbizness at April 3, 2006 2:54 PM

Well, given that the Republicans were squawking about the Texas Miracle in education when Bush was running for prez and now all the squawking about how we desperately need school reform because all of our schools suck, I would have to say that Perry has led the state from being tops in the country (according to the Bushites in 2000) to being close to Mississippi in terms of education excellence.

How in the world could our education system be the MODEL for all of Bush's education intiatives and 6 years later the system is in such shambles that Grusendork and his bretheren insist that we must have education reform or all of our students will be imbeciles. Weren't the Rs in charge much of this time? So, aren't they responsible for dragging down the system that Bush built?

And why has no reporter picked up on this contradiction? Why doesn't One Tough Grandma and Chris Bell drag this out. Seems like a good criticism of either the R's inability to lead on education reform or their calls for ed reform.

UT_guy at April 3, 2006 3:08 PM

VP, not Pres. He's been angling for this for awhile now.

Blue at April 3, 2006 5:19 PM

Click my name for governor approval ratings as of 3/21/06. Per SurveyUSA, Perry was at 48%. He was in the 30s last August.

Fine Bottled Water at April 3, 2006 7:34 PM

UT_guy... good question. If you're looking for a scathing attack out of Bell you're going to be waiting for a while.

I don't know about Rick Perry the man, but Rick Perry the Hair is nothing if not electable.

Gimme head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

He couldn't be much worse than King George. Then again, he couldn't be much worse than a Democrat either. There are only two real alternative parties:

Green Party
Libertarian Party

Mike N. at April 3, 2006 11:53 PM

The RNC told him that if he could avoid raising taxes he would be the only sitting governor to do so and would be a shoe-in for the VP nod. Yep, it's true. I think it is why he is calling the tax plan a swap instead of new taxes. If he can convince the public, then he is gold.

sabestian at April 4, 2006 8:01 AM

Is the RNC really that dumb... we were all 'go along, get along' in 2000 with Bush. This mook really isn't trasnportable.

Actually, it would be kind of funny. It would be the first time an R lost Texas WITH A running mate FROM Texas.

Mike - just as soon as either start polling more than 15% let me know! Until then, you better work from within the D camp. Either that or become an evangelical and start sucking Tina's tit.

original TREY at April 4, 2006 10:02 AM

Trey,

Once you pull your head out of your ass and realize that the Republican and Democratic Parties are really just one Megaparty you might understand the point. If you don't vote for change, you will not get it.

Mike N. at April 4, 2006 10:04 AM

Gosh Mike N., you've sounded like such a Republican up until now. What changed, freak?

And UT_guy, i would say reporters "picked up" on the fact that Bush's assertions about the fantastic education system in Texas were bunk during his first campaign - and Carole and Chris aren't bothering with it because it's Bush-bashing, which doesn't have much relevance in the governor's race. It makes Bush look like a liar when he said we had a great education system, not Perry.

drinks_at_the_stephen_f at April 4, 2006 4:58 PM

drinks_at_the_stephen_f,

You have to be either:

1) The dumbest person on earth

or

2) Can't read.

Mike N. at April 4, 2006 10:11 PM

Mike - Reality's a bitch, isn't it? The problem with libertarians is that both parties can soooo easily coopt your message.

Quit tilting at windmills. It may be some work, but you can create the change you want to see within the parties.
