Onward Christian Soldiers

Did y'all know that in America there is a war on Christians? Even though 85% of Americans identify themselves as Christian, we are being persecuted? Rep. Tom DeLay and Sen. John Cornyn both spoke at some event to rally the troops with reports from the "frontlines" of this war.

"We are after all a society that abides abortion on demand, that has killed millions of innocent children, that degrades the institution of marriage and often treats Christianity like some second-rate superstition. Seen from this perspective, of course there is a war on Christianity," he said.
Alarmist, much? Doesn't persecution usually take the form of something we saw in Afghanistan or Indonesia where people are put to death for converting to Christianity?

The fact that 'leaders' in our country are fueling this nonsense is...damn, I can't even figure out a word for it. The fact that people are so stupid to believe it is another story altogether. Since I am a Christian should I be in fear for my life now? We always thought the liberals defending the separation of Church and State were just out to defend the Constitution, we also thought liberals were all whiny pussies but now it turns out they're trying to kill me because I love Jesus!

I think there is a visible tendency from people of the liberal persuasion to jump on Christians any chance they get. But, to a certain extent Christians also perpuate this to a certain degree.

Wonk at March 30, 2006 11:16 AM

Oh, bullshit. Pointless little people who are upset over pointless little things. Jesus called them hypocrits. Today we call them Baptists.

original TREY at March 30, 2006 11:37 AM

Fear and hate = Republican fuel.

Fine Bottled Water at March 30, 2006 12:40 PM

Hate and lose asses=Liberal Demorcatic Fuel

Wonk at March 30, 2006 1:20 PM

Crying persecution when your not?

(And to think they call the liberals "whiney".)

Anonymous at March 30, 2006 2:15 PM

Oh, Wonk, you're just pissy because no one of the 'liberal persuasion' wants to jump on your ass.

original TREY at March 30, 2006 3:17 PM

God thinks Delay should do jail time.

The Other Guy at March 30, 2006 3:32 PM

Not much different than the tactics used by D's to appeal to environmentalists , the scare tactics used to target African-Americans (remember NAACP's return of slavery commercial), the theocrat langauge used to appeal to the secular wing, more scare tactics for the elderly, etc. Pretty typical stuff in politics. Probably bugs you, and Trey, because your image of people who are both Republican and religious is that of a knuckle-dragger living in a trailer waiting for orders from Jerry Falwell.

snrub at March 30, 2006 4:09 PM

Its the compassionate conservative knuckle draggers you have to watch out for.

treehugger at March 30, 2006 4:27 PM

Well, Snrub, if the shoe fits...

I don't remember the last time I saw an ad from the AARP or NAACP asking people to restrict the rights of women or GLBT people. Only the 'religious' folks do that. I'm a Methodist and I don't consider them anymore Christian than television.

Jesus was quite clear on this in Matthew.

original TREY at March 30, 2006 6:34 PM

I gots to say, kudos to Trey for calling a spade a hipocrit! I am arecovering Southern Baptist and I couldn't agree with more with Trey but I think Jesus called them Pharisees and we call them Baptists.

I think "liberals" of the regligoud bent like me really should use the word Pharisee(sp) more often. I'd love to see what Falwell and company would say to that.

BacchusXY at March 30, 2006 9:00 PM

Falwell isn't interested in the concerns of those who make less the 200K a year.

Anonymous at March 31, 2006 1:58 PM

Can you point me to the section of Matthew on gay marrigae? I've reviewed it and can't find it.

snrub at March 31, 2006 2:36 PM

Dumb fuck.

RockStar at March 31, 2006 4:37 PM

Ummm, who mentioned gay marriage? I don't remember that coming up in relation to the hypocracy of the Pharisees. And incidentally, that Falwell isn't interested in people that make under 200K a year is exactly one of the reasons we should call them Pharisees. If Dan Brown can make Santorum into a noun for the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter then surely a group of liberal bloggers can get the media and some ignorant (aren't they all) politicians to call the crazies on the right Pharisees.

BacchusXY at March 31, 2006 5:03 PM

Snrub - Though my original point in mentioning the irrational hatred of faux 'Christians' for GLBT people was to respond to your 'knuckle dragging' remark, you make an excellent point. Which is why the 'religious' right have to use Leviticus.

Any more short bus questions?

original TREY at April 1, 2006 12:07 AM

Ohhhh..Snap!

Trey got it right: there aren't any homo-hating diatribes in the New Testament, which is why the modern day Pharisees have to reach way back to Leviticus to find something to beat up the queers.

Oddly, they don't seem to take as much joy in other Leviticus passages. Why are they remaining silent as people run around wearing cloth made from two different kinds of threads? It's an abomination in the eyes of the Lord!!!

And if they are all about the "sanctity" of marriage, what about divorce? That is condemned in no uncertain terms in the New Testament, but they remain oddly silent about that too....wonder why?
