Sunday School in High School

Coming out of New Braunfels yesterday:

"A Bible class will be offered next semester at New Braunfels High School. Trustees voted Monday to adopt the elective course based on the book: 'The Bible and Its Influence.' Supporters say the purpose of the class will be to look at the Bible's influence on art, literature and popular culture."

I say the same thing for this as I say for private school vouchers...why the hell don't we work on fixing the current problems before we go off running up more debt and stretching resources even thinner on some hare-brained attempt to appease the far right?

Just like they started calling Creationism "Intelligent Design", bible study "The Bible and its Influences", and poluting permission "Clear Skies" initiative, doesn't change anything. It is lipstick on a pig. Next, they'll be calling vouchers "opportunity rebates" . And you are right - this is all about appeasement - red meat to the base. But they are riding the tiger here - at some point that base will escalate their demand for red meat and Big Money will rebel. Some point.

Even the Vatican thinks Intelligent Design isn't a viable scientific theory. See today's New York Times.

TOG, that's old news in halfway-educated caholic circles - interesting that the Times has picked it up, though, hope it does some good - but don't hold your breath.

The local school board can do whatever they want as long as they don't mess with the Gruene party.

I'm not a religious person, but I think classes like this are ok when done properly.
I have frends who miss certain references in movies and books because they are not familiar with the bible.
