Sunday News Roundup

  • 87 year-old Dallas grandmother declines invitation to enlist in the Army. "I just cannot get up early in the morning," she said. Army then turns its sights on pre-schoolers in an attempt to make quotas. [Statesman]

  • Texas GOP caucus meets at DFW airport to decide to not to decide who to support for House Majority Leader. The SA Express News is subtly bitchy with just one small sentence: " DeLay, who has vowed to remain neutral in the House majority race, took part in the meeting by conference call." Bwahaha. [SAX-N]

  • Debates legitimize challengers to incumbents. Incumbents refusing to debate challengers unless absolutely necessary or right up until the election is political science 101. But, we already see all of Perry's challengers trying to jump up in his face for a debate. Uhm, how about maybe after March. [DMN]

  • Governor Perry must have had some sort of bain malfunction trying to make this football analogy in an interview with the Midland Reporter-Telegram:
"You know, some vicious rumor comes out and that's hard on family. I'm a big guy. I'm pretty tough skinned because I've been doing this for 20 years. Protesters are like opposing football players who say, 'We're going to do X, Y and Z and these guys aren't going to be a speed bump.'

"And the coach cuts that out and puts it on the bulletin board. That's how I look at folks who attack me or my programs. They just energize me."

He totally, like, just gave her cab money and said he'd call her when he can.
