Strayhorn's an Independent **UPDATE**

Carole Keeton Strayorn is running as an independent candidate for Governor. Keep your eyes peeled come, a 4 way come November's gonna be real fun and we'll be here to criticize everyone in the race. Also seen around Pease elementary where she announced was the Kinky Friedman campaign, we'll wait to see what they have to say. If anyone with the Alvarado or even Perry, Larry Kilgore or Rhett Smith campaign wants to shoot us a comment feel free to.

**UPDATE**
Democrat Chris Bell's camp responds, an excerpt below...
The algebra of the 4-way race gives an advantage to a party nominee because he has an identifiable base of voters. Heck, the party even keeps a list of them. If Chris Bell holds onto the 37% that voted for John Kerry and the 40% that voted for Tony Sanchez, he wins. And that math would seem to favor a scrapper such as Chris Bell who has a history of sticking up for what Democrats believe in. Chris has been saying for a year that this is a nomination worth fighting for, and today's development only grabs that knob and turns it up to 11.
We also think that Chris Bell looks pretty good in a 4-way race that includes a flawed and vulverable incumbent and two extra campaigns trying to sack the castle.

**UPDATE 2**
Democrat Bob Gammage weighs in...
This is bad news for Rick Perry and great news for Texas. This guarantees that Rick Perry will have two strong opponents shedding light on his shortcomings all the way to November. There are plenty of decent Republicans out there who are fed up with Perry, Tom DeLay and the corrupt GOP Leadership.

**UPDATE 3**
Republican challenger to Rick Perry, Larry Kilgore gave me his 2 cents on Strayhorn's leaving...
"Strayhorn's announcement won't affect much. She and Perry both believe it is ok to murder preborn children of rape victims. I am the only 100% pro-life candidate for governor. Anyone found guilty in a court of law for the crime of abortion should be executed."

So yeah, there ya go.

I forgot to mention earlier that the Dems now have another Lite Guv candidate, Ben Grant. BOR has a little profile on him. What with all these independent gubernatorial candidates, I'm thinking of heading down to the Secretary of State's office and filing myself as an independent lite gov. Maybe Carole or Kinky will let me on their ticket.

All the Dems should rush to her aid if they want to have any chance of influence with a statewide officeholder.
In particular all Austinites should consider helping her out.
She is relatively moderate and a former Austin Mayor.

Paul at January 2, 2006 2:54 PM

Perhaps a dumb question, but here goes: Can Strayhorn and Kinky get the SAME 45,450 registered-non-primary-voting signatures?

Nothing special at January 2, 2006 2:55 PM

To me, that is the ultimate question, Nothing special. The D's have several primary races of interest around the state, as do the R's. All of those voters are out, Independent-petition-wise. I'm suprised she did it. Maybe she has some poll numbers that indicate she has the in-road there.

godmother at January 2, 2006 3:08 PM

Why should all Democrats or Independents go running to Carole's aid? She has been running to the right of Perry over the past 12 months trying to win the hard right vote to get through the primary. She said in her filing speech "I am a Republican ..." The once "Tough Grandma" now looks like she's down for the count.

You've Got to Be Joking at January 2, 2006 3:26 PM

A voters signature is inavlid if they sign the petition of more than one candidate running for the same office.

Lefty at January 2, 2006 3:31 PM

Even in a four way race a candidate has to receive a majority of the votes, right? I don't think I have ever seen a runoff in the general election. Not that I have seen a four way race with four folks spending large amounts of money....

I think i know the answer, but to be sure at January 2, 2006 3:56 PM

I agree with You've got... she said she was a Republican for several years and that is what she "should" be running as. Anything else and it looks as though it is just politically motivated and not "for the people" - but for Carole in this case.

I recommend all moderate Republicans and Democrats, as well as Independents, support either Kinky or Chris Bell.

gayinmidland at January 2, 2006 3:59 PM

Here are excerpts from her announcement speech. She sounds moderate both socially and fiscally.

The choice for voters will be to either try to move Texas incrementally back toward the middle or to blow their vote on someone who is unelectable.

"We can and we must trust Texans and give them Initiative and Referendum so the people, not professional politicians, can determine their own future. Let the people vote.

I believe in applying my yellow pages test across state government. Government should do no job if there is a business in the yellow pages that can do that job better and at a lower cost.

The chief role of government in the economy is to create incentives for work, savings and investment ? and any program, regulatory, spending or tax which interferes with that mission ought to be blasted off the bureaucratic books.

I have called for and will continue to fight for a 3 K dollar pay raise across the board now for Texas teachers, with a competitive automatic pay increase every two years just to get us to the mid-way point in these United States, and we ought to be Number One.

One billion to 2 billion dollars a year are being sucked out of Texas classrooms by racetracks in Louisiana, New Mexico and now Oklahoma. That is why I support video lottery terminals that will repatriate those dollars, those ponies, and those jobs back to our Texas classrooms --- that would more than pay for the teacher pay increase we should deliver now.

? And he even recommended partnering with sexually oriented businesses to finance public education.

As a mama and a grandmamma, I don?t want to tax these businesses. I want to put them out of business.

I say this is not a sin tax, but a sleaze tax.

I call it TexasNextStep -- I want every Texas high school graduate once they get that diploma in their hands to have the opportunity to go on to two-years of a public community college or technical college ? I want K through 14 to be the norm in Texas.

My goal is crystal clear?I want Texas to have the most educated workforce in the nation.

My bottom line?I am a fiscal conservative. I am a common sense conservative.

I?d rather spend $2,500 a year educating a young Texan, than $16,000 a year incarcerating that young Texan.

Our Texas economy is number two in the world on a per capita basis, and Texas is number two in these United States with children living in poverty ? 1.5 M children ? we ought to be ashamed.

My bottom line? I?d rather spend $98 a month insuring a child, than $6,700 dollars for one hospital stay for that child. "

Paul at January 2, 2006 4:08 PM

Carole Keeton McClelland Rylander Strayhorn has been feeding from the same cash trough as Rick Perry for years.
Anyone who thinks some of that "right wing" sh*t hasn't rubbed off, is either kidding themselves or spinning you.

Are you now telling me that it's okay to sell your principles for campaign contributions? A moderate? Not likely.... an opportunist? Much closer to the mark.

What makes you think that if Strayhorn couldn't beat Perry in March, she'd have a better chance in November?

Sounds to me like she's just trying to postpone the inevitable.

FWIW, Gammage seems delighted that Strayhorn has marginalized herself. Bell... well, he still seems to be worried about Kinky.....

Yellow Dog at January 2, 2006 4:13 PM

Even in a four way race a candidate has to receive a majority of the votes, right?

A plurality. No runoff in the general.

So Chris Bell (or maybe even Bob Gammage, I suppose) holds onto the 37% that voted for John Kerry in 2004, and the 40% that voted for Tony Sanchez in 2002, he wins, because a plurality of votes of that approximate percentage will elect the next Governor of Texas.

PDiddie at January 2, 2006 5:35 PM

Remember Jake Pickle! May Carole go down in flames. Gammage is the guy to watch, but Perry is the big winner today. Don't kid yourselves about that, but he will have to run a very adept campaign between now and November. The right wing dickheads may not let him be nimble enough.

The Other Guy at January 2, 2006 5:39 PM

hey paul,

Where's my Texas Tomorrow Fund money? Still waiting for ol' Carole to call me back about that after she ditched that program at the direction of her right wing grassroots supporters.

I'm here, waitin' by the phone......

Gringa at January 2, 2006 6:19 PM

I think Democrats should not focus on the "37% for Kerry" line of thought. I say that because I voted for Kerry in '04, but am voting for Kinky in '06. I imagine that there are at least some others out there like me.

Grant Gus at January 2, 2006 6:40 PM

Grant is right. Kinky = Nader, but at least CKMRS=Perot now

George at January 2, 2006 8:26 PM

Plurality is all that is needed in Texas EXCEPT for elections to executive department. The state constitution lists exec dept as The Executive Department of the State shall consist of a Governor, who shall be the Chief Executive Officer of the State, a Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Comptroller of Public Accounts, Commissioner of the General Land Office, and Attorney General.

need a majority for Gov. at January 3, 2006 12:15 AM

For those of you advocating a vote for Kinky, what are his positions? I've seen his ads and read a few articles about him, but other than his being an alternative to the normal politicos I have no sense of his policy platform.

curious voter at January 3, 2006 10:00 AM

George, you are wrong about the run-off requirement. In 1998 the Comptroller's race was 49.5 for Rylander and 48.9 for Hobby. There was no run-off. Also, in 1990 Richards beat Clayton Williams around 49-47%. There were no run-off. Unless they just made some sort of change, there won't be a run-off in 2006 either.

This just became a Gammage v. Strayhorn race. Perry won't pull enough mainstream R's and the far right won't be enough to push him forward.

Kinky will be lucky if he breaks 10% with Gammage in the race.

original TREY at January 3, 2006 11:30 AM

I suppose Gammage is counting on crucial 75 to the grave voting demographic to make the runoff. Mail ballots anyone?

Marie at January 3, 2006 3:51 PM

Well, Marie, at least he doesn't have much of a problem getting people excited about his candidacy, regardless of age.

Abby Normal at January 3, 2006 10:38 PM

Aww... you're excited? That's nice!

Marie at January 4, 2006 9:55 AM

They cannot get the same sigs, but there are plenty of registered voters around who will not vote in the primaries.

The Govenor must get 50%, so there will be a run-off.

LegallyClear at January 4, 2006 5:55 PM

Ann Richards didn't break 50% in 1990. Did they change the law? There was no run-off back then. She beat Williams 49-47.
