"They're obviously trying to promote an agenda on one side of the political spectrum," said Will Lutz, a columnist who wrote a scathing piece on the center for the socially conservative Texans for Texas group. "What we've created is a government-funded advocacy group for values a lot of Texans don't agree with."Within the next year, conservative groups say they plan to draft legislation that would require the center to be paid for by private sponsors instead of student fees.
Ah...the old "promoting a lifestyle" arguement. We surely hope that the folks at UT realize the importance of providing services to all of their students and not just the close-minded bigots.
No. Student fees.
I gather students are willing to paying for this. Meaning this is not being taken out of tution.
If this is the case, then more power to the queers.
Yeah, the students actually prepare the budget and it is then approved by the Regents.
Oh God... another 'Conservative' closet case trying to make a career by bashing gays and lesbians. About as shocking as anything that comes from Ann Coulter's mouth.
Mr. Chisum will be staning in line to prefile this bill in November. What does the LGRL say?
"Mr. Lutz says student groups have their place on campus as an expression of free speech. But a center that asserts that it's OK to be gay or lesbian is a misuse of money in a state that recently voted overwhelmingly to ban gay marriage, he said."
That's right--it's not ok to be gay. We'd much rather have kids be lonely and miserable their entire lives.
Those whiners at the YCT's have been trying this tactic since the 1980s (Get a life! better yet, a date!)
The Student Service Fees are controlled by a committee of students. (subject to rubber stamp by the regents) The Fee funds the Health center (contraception, oh my!), student activities, student government, computer services -- basically all student services except for direct instruction. No one student (or group of date-less students) gets a line-item veto.
Loser bigots!
My recommendation to conservative students opposed to paying for the center, is that they find somewhere else to go to school.
Brady... they just want everyone to be like them:)!
Alexander, exactly. I'd like to suggest BJ U (http://www.bju.edu/)
This place is funded by state dollars?
