Senfronia's Coming Back

Representative Senfronia Thompson has announced her intention to seek an 18th term in the Lege. We are so relieved. Without her the social conscience of the House would surely suffer an agonizing death. Full release after the jump.

Rep. Senfronia Thompson Announces for 18th Legislative Session

(HOUSTON, TX) Rep. Senfronia Thompson (D-NE Houston/Humble) announced this week that she has filed for an unprecedented 18th term in the Texas House of Representatives.
With the retirement from the House of former Speaker Pete Laney, Thompson will be the only remaining member of the Reform Class of 1973, the largest freshman class in state history. A majority of the House were newcomers that year, following the Sharpstown Scandal.
Rep. Thompson is looking forward to the upcoming special session on public school finance. “The schoolchildren and teachers of Texas have been shortchanged for too long, Thompson declared.
Rep. Thompson said she intends to advocate for poorer school districts like North Forest, Humble and Aldine. “While the governor’s good buddies have received billions in privatization contracts, the percentage of the state funds budgeted to schools has declined 20% under the Bush and Perry administrations.
Rep. Thompson is the author of dozens of laws and hundreds of amendments, including the James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Act, racial profiling bans, contraceptive parity for women and laws improving child support collection. Her friend of the court brief was cited by the Texas Supreme Court in overturning the state’s old school finance system which discriminated against poorer school districts. The Texas Family Law Section named her as one of the 3 most important legislators four sessions in a row.
Last session, the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus presented her the prestigious Matt Garcia Award. The Texas Bar Journal recognized Thompson for passing the Houston Land Bank program to build and revitalize single-family homes in inner-city neighborhoods. Her initiative to provide free cervical cancer screening was also recognized among the few new laws passed.
“I will continue to build on the bipartisan relationships I have developed, Thompson promised, “And I will continue to speak out for my constituents.
Rep. Thompson is the only recipient of the Legislative Black Caucus Rosa Parks Award. In 2001, Rep. Thompson was named one of the state’s 10 Best Legislators in 2001 by Texas Monthly, she was selected as an Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow, and named one of the “6 Legislators Who Rocked the Legislature by the AP. In 2003, Nation chose her as one of 8 legislators nationwide “who could teach Congressional Democrats.
Thompson is the longest-serving African-American and longest-serving female in Texas legislative history.

Wonk at December 21, 2005 2:40 PM

No, you're just a douchebag.

Josh at December 21, 2005 2:45 PM

HA!

am not

Wonk at December 21, 2005 2:51 PM

Wonk should change his name to something else, because "Wonk" is a term for people well-versed in policy and legislation, not for little haters who call Ms. T a bitch and don't really know much of anything at all.

Marie at December 21, 2005 3:54 PM

I personally think "Wank" might work well for him?

Josh at December 21, 2005 4:08 PM

Wonk cracks me up. I like to imagine him as Scrooge-like in a dark office somewhere slightly north of the dead end of Congress.

PinkDome at December 21, 2005 4:20 PM

Look the hateful bitch made an apperance.

Wonk at December 21, 2005 4:21 PM

Cunt! Cunt! Cunt!

Anonymous at December 21, 2005 4:22 PM

good god, y'all. Do you kiss your momma with that mouth?

bluebonnet at December 21, 2005 4:27 PM

Does having a foul mouth and calling everyone who diasgrees with you a racist or a cracker amount to having a social conscience?

snrub at December 21, 2005 4:54 PM

WTF are you talking about, Burns?

Marie at December 21, 2005 4:59 PM

Whoa. Someone drank their hateorade today.

Pink Lady at December 21, 2005 5:41 PM

No shit, PL. I'm hatin on some Australians right now.

Marie at December 21, 2005 6:00 PM

Burns? LOL nice.

Really.

Wonk at December 21, 2005 6:13 PM

PD, this is getting ridiculous.

Don't Mess w/ Pink at December 22, 2005 10:22 AM

I agree. There are two wonk's I've tried to register my name with typekey but, it is not working for some reason.

The Wonk at December 22, 2005 10:25 AM

i *told* you that was an imposter, don't mess - That is not the real Wonk, it's some jackass who's screwin it up for everyone, not just him.

drinks_at_the_stephen_f at December 22, 2005 10:29 AM

Talking about her calling one state rep from Dripping Springs a cracker. I'm sure she has been called worse, but in addition to being nasty it is just low class to throw around racial slurs.

snrub at December 22, 2005 2:49 PM

I remember when she ripped the mic away from Grussendorf last Regular. Your right snub she is just plain nasty.....

Wonk at December 22, 2005 3:25 PM

That, my friends, was actually the "real Wonk" who made the original comment at the beginning of this thread that was stricken by PD. It appears he is hiding behind me, the impostor, so that he can show his true side and blame it on me. Believe it.

Wonk at December 22, 2005 5:02 PM

Oh please, get over it. People have called Ms. Thompson names for 30 years because she is a black woman that dares speak up for herself and for the oppressed & disenfranchised. But it's really very sweet that your feelings are hurt for little Mr. Big Shot from DS, Burns. Admit it - it's because you think he's cute, isn't it?

Marie at December 22, 2005 5:27 PM

First, no one in this country is oppressed. Second, it is still classless to drop racial slurs even if she has been called worse (and I have heard way too many people drop the N word about her around the Capitol which is not cool). Third, as far as state reps go, I guess he is probably good looking. He's no Gattis.

snrub at December 22, 2005 10:34 PM

"First, no one in this country is oppressed"

Translation: "I got mine, so what's with the fucking problem?"

Spoken like a genuine entitled asshole.

For Wonk and those others who didn't work with Senfronia during the passage of the Hate Crimes Bill:
She had to fight W who said as governor we already had enough laws. She had to fight Shapiro who had to do what she was told by W in opposition to pleas of her mother a holocaust survivor and her Rabbi to suppor the bill.

KelWien at December 23, 2005 2:25 PM

Hate Crimes continued: Later W as president said we needed a federal hate crimes bill because of the attacks on the persons of middle eastern descent. How like him to chan ge his mind for political expedience.
Senfronia got Chism to vote for the bill and bring 10 votes with him. Hate crimes were against blacks, jews, and gays. Nothing racial here. Bigotry is what Senfronia tirelessly fights

KelWien at December 23, 2005 2:28 PM

She singlehandedly got increase in personal needs allotment for nursing home residents. She got support for women who were abandoned by their worthless husbands when Texas was the only entity in US without alimony. She got parity for women who did not receive money for birth control. Remeber "Redlining in the bedroom."
Everyone who is not a straight white man has need to thank her for many unpopular bills she worked tirelessly to get passed.

KelWien at December 23, 2005 2:34 PM

She got police cars to have to have video cams to stop racial profiling (DWB) by our finest! If you are dark colored from days at the beach thank her for your protection while driving and not having your tail ligts get mysteriouly broken.

Wonk: get the whole story about her, before you make mindless attacks.

BTW: Flo Shapiro had sponsored the hate crimes bill before W got contol of her mind. Who is the inconsistent?

KelWien at December 23, 2005 2:40 PM

When we had a budget problem two sessions ago, Wohlgemuth cut the personal needs attoment. Your grandmother in a nursing home had to wear wet diapers until Senfronia got a small increase last session. Your grandparents thank her, so should you,

KelWien at December 23, 2005 2:44 PM

I'm sorry, poor Sen. Shapiro, who "had to do what W told her" in spite of her mom's pleas as a holocaust survivor.

I love Senfronia but Shapiro can kiss my ass.
