Senator Edwards wants to encourage the youth of America to become 'loud and ferocious' in fighting poverty in America. Ironically, Senator Edwards is about as ferocious as a piece of milquetoast. His speech to the friendly crowd of wide-eyed students was informative, but not inspiring. Mr. Edwards could be commended for his 'college tour' to light the spark of activism in students. But, I'll let other blogs do that.
John Edwards is a likable fella, but he just didn't light a fire under my ass. I guess the same could be said about the American voters in the last election. I did take a lot of notes during his 'special time with bloggers' after his speech, but it was because he was sitting right in front of me and I didn't want to seem like a dick. Rawhide was there, he'll probably tell you what the speech and movement is all about. His hair did look good, though. Beats Rick Perry's hair by a factor of ten. And speaking of Rick Perry, when will he ever give 'special time with bloggers' cause I know I would have a few good questions, mofo.
**UPDATE** Ok, maybe I was a little hard on Senator Edwards. I was in a foul mood yesterday and perhaps that clouded my awe at his altruism and efforts to bring the fight against poverty in America to a discussion among college students. Mea Culpa. Senator Edwards was informative, and his speech made some points that were off the scale in terms of being obvious. He declared that the fight for poverty was the new moral issue of our day and it was up to us to expect moral leaders, regardless of party, to fight this fight.
All of those are things I can agree with him on. I stand by my post that he's just not a dynamic speaker, he's endearing and likable...but not dynamic.
So, do something. Fight poverty. Volunteer. Edwards is right, Hurricane Katrina brought the ugly face of poverty to our television sets. And we all know if we see it on television, it must be true.
Better?
Show me a dignfied leader that can win and get results and I'll quit my job and join up and drink the Kool-Aid. But, with the current state of American politics, I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. I want someone to fight for me and I'm sick of asking politiely for someone to call busllshit on what's going on. The mainstream media certainly doesn't do it And, quite frankly, none of the Dems are either. They all sound like pussies. I want a smart, articulate attack-dog.
Pink Dome, an attack-dog might satisfy your anger towards the state of our union... but an attack dog cannot lead. Because true leadership requires grace and magnanimity ... Lincoln had it... kennedy had it... FDR had it... Bush doesn't have it...
Edwards lost a 16 year old son who was tremendously close to him... and yet, he has it in him to carry on with life with the kind of passion and fire he does. Trust me my friend, that is no trait for pussies.
Let me leave you with a quote:
"There is nothing so strong as gentleness, and nothing is so gentle as true strength." - Ralph Sockman
And, I disagree that only the attack dogs have it in them to win. I believe if we can find the right messenger who knows how to stand up for his convictions... we'll see victory. Being dignified yet forceful are not mutually exclusive.
Replacing a president who is a conservative partisan hack with a liberal partisan hack is no progress for this country.
Dude, this just too nasty (including your comment above).
Next time sleep off the hangover and let someone else cover the event.
Come on, can't I be pissy and in a bad mood once in a while?
Well, I'll have to say that you hold the minority view there ;)
If for you, "ferocious" means "angry".. then yes, Edwards is not an angry guy. However, passion and charisma are something the guy has in spades.... but obviously you didn't see it, so I guess we can disagree on that.
btw.. when he says "loud and ferocious" ... I'm sure he doesn't mean the kids to get all "angry" about it... he means to do something with coviction and passion, which I think he does himself very well. He is too much of a southern gentleman to be throwing angry rhetoric around... and frankly, I want my leaders to be dignified, visionary and impassioned, and not ferocious or angry.... the latter is the job of the activists.
