The pastor of Woodland Hills Baptist Church has a sign out front that says, "The Big Easy is the Modern Day Sodom and Gomorrah." An evacuee confronted the pastor and he says that New Orleans, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and New York are evil cities full of what we can only guess are intelligent people with brains enough not to live in Tyler.
You can watch the video of a KLTV news clip here.
You can also call Wiley Bennet, the pastor there at 903-581-2333 and tell him that perhaps Tyler is the Modern Day Sodom and Gomorrah.
The evacuee confronted Pastor Bennet and said she wasn't saying he was evil. We don't have such restraint. We loudly say he is evil.
New Orleans is a tiny part of the area damaged
Outside of New Orleans, its mostly BibleBelt.
So this Einstein thinks his "God" has destroyed
the better part of 3 States, trying to destroy the
city of New Orleans?Delusional to say the least
Perhaps Jesus is sending the Biblethumpers a
message, they intend on ignoring.NewOrleans
got all of the press, and attention.
Does he really think Jesus has such poor aim?
And by the way,Vegas, LA, and San Francisco
are doing just fine.
Its the deep biblebelt that has been destroyed.
One would think the reprobates would get the picture.
But Nooooooo
He is just a little upset that there are getting to be as many sodomites outside the church as within.
Do you really think you should be attacking an entire community based on the actions of one Baptist pastor? Just asking.
PD, I like Tyler. It's those crazy fundys I can't stand. Tyler is actually sorta pretty, and there are some nice people there.
"Do you really think you should be attacking an entire community based on the actions of one Baptist pastor? Just asking."
and then...
"The Big Easy is the Modern Day Sodom and Gomorrah."
Turnabout is fair play.
I live just outside of Tyler and while it is "pretty", the city is probably 70% fundy...
Oh, newswatching. There's a pastor, a man of God, making insulting remarks about people who have suffered the worst natural disaster in our country's history, and you would rather come back at a blogger who writes a catchy headline to get people (including you) to read what a fucking disgusting thing this pastor has done. So sad, so sad...
Until I accidentally saw your website, I was happily not thinking about a dickhead from Tyler. It's a good thing to point out so that I can remember that not everyone is as open minded as I am and that I should be grateful not to be a bigot.
check out the bigot's mug:
http://www.gower.net/Community/whbc/index.html
also note his welcoming message:
"Whenever in the Tyler,Texas area please come visit an Independent, Fundamentel Baptist Church."
unless you're from an eee-vel city filled with ass-fuckers! jackass.
Please call this man as often as possible, and email your friends with the video link and phone number. I found that he will come to the phone if you avoid yelling and cussing (obvioulsy hard to do).
We can pressure this person to make a change if we all take a few minutes and pass the information through our email lists.
I agree, DH. This guy needs to be confronted with true compassion and a reasoned reminder that the very lord he presumably serves would never approve of that sort of behavior. I've found that the fundies are often paralyzed when their bigotry is confronted by calm, irrefutable logic.
However, does anyone find it odd that this kind of ridiculously fervent religious-based hate often originates in rural areas from members of the "greatest generation"? No comprende.
This post at Boingboing reminded me that a lot of fundys consider this hurricane a sign of end-times:
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/09/08/katrina_blog_account.html
I haven't bought in to that greatest generation thing. They screwed up plenty, namely their kids. So, overall, their generation is no better and probably no worse than any other.
Fucktard should be confronted. The nice, calm approach will baffle him and probably make the church secretary, who is probably a nice old gal, more comfortable.
On the end times, one of the tabloids is saying this Sunday is the rapture. Sin now, get right on Saturday.
Welcome to my hometown, folks. That comment doesn't surprise me at all, sad to say.
CBS-Tyler did a story on this tonight. "Pastor" Bennett won't be taking the sign down. He changes the sign once a week and he's not planning on changing his routine.
the e-mail address at the church is woodlandhillsbaptist@juno.com. I wrote a scathing e-mail to the paster and copied 50 friends and hope they follow suit.
Good god...Once again i am so ashamed to be living in East Texas. I have said for many years that Tyler is is the meanest place I have ever been to...once again they prove it to be true.
You can also reach Wiley at (903) 526-1982, which is a number I just dialed. I think I got his wife, the poor creature. I'm sure this number will be disconnected by the end of the week, though, once people start calling it.
After all, technology is evil and computers are the tool of SATAN! BURN YE SINNERS!
I have to say that to group all of us who live in TYLER together is just the same kind of dogmatic bs pastor Bennett spews!
I have been seeing this a lot - EAST TEXANS etc.., well, I saw that sign on the 3rd of sept and since then, I have mounted quite a campaign against the sign - after my confrontation with Bennett who told me "it was Biblical"
so - PLEASE,( there are many many many of us who are sharing our homes, our time, food, clothing and giving money to the citizens of all the affected areas, I, for one, am very, very proud of our suppport --throughout the entire State.........),
do not generalize about who/what we are here in Tyler - I can attest that the majority of the residents I know, feel this sign is blasphemous!
Here's a good article showing what people think of that sign. Lots of folks are pretty pissed off about it, which is nice to see.
http://www.kltv.com/global/story.asp?s=3826469&ClientType=Printable
While the sign might not have been appropriate the message is not all wrong. I think that perhaps is might just be better to offend a few people than to sit by and say nothing. If even one person turns their life over to God becuase of this sign then wouldn't it be worth it?
No, Brian, the message is all wrong. The New Testament teaches that Jesus' greatest commandment was to love your neighbor as yourself, and he forgave venal sin quite easily but lost his temper at rabbis who used hairsplitting theology to exclude people from God's grace.
Grace is not about fear. Anyone who was converted because they were afraid they'd be hit by a natural disaster in a week or two wouldn't be converted long. Conversion isn't born in fear. Study the life of Paul. Read the Bible for yourself. Don't settle for fear-mongering bumper sticker slogans as your only experience of the Bible.
And what about the many more people who'd read that sign and think: Church is a place to go to meet the meanest people in the world, people without compassion, anti-Samaritans.
This is not a message that will convert anyone. It's an advertisement against converting. To believe you are saved, and that you, in an instant, can spot people who aren't, is megalomania. Love is humble. (I got this from a good source.)
While God is a God of Love he is also jealous and wrathful God.
psalms 9:15-17 The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot takes.
The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah. The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations tht forget God.
New Orleans, known for a murder rate 10X the national average, is a cesspool of crime and filth that desperately needs flushing" said Pat Robertson, in an apparent attempt to dethrone Anne Coulter as the "most despised media personality of 2005. Robertson continued, "A catastrophe of biblical proportions is just what this Sodom and Gomorrah deserves." Even some liberals were forced to agree."
"Hurricane Katrina -- flush New Orleans down the toilet!" screamed "Preacher" Joe Gooberson, Alabama resident, who is a founding member of the You Don't Speak For Me, Cindy anti-anti-war group, and who is also anti-New Orleans. "I've been down to that stinking dump called New Orleans -- it's a bunch of gay stripteasing live sex shows and other un-Christian filth. This is their day of repentence. The wrath of God descends upon Sodom and Gomorrah!"
"The righteous retribution of the Almighty is coming to get all you Big Easy homosexuals!" screamed William Hollard in all caps, on the East Salvation Evangelical forum for Christian bloggers. "It's not so Big Easy clinging to the rooftops in your man-size high heel shoes now is it? Ha ha ha ha ha!!!"
"This hurricane was sent by Intelligent Design, you God-forsaken prostitutes and gamblers, drunkards, gays, hoodoo worshippers, God has come a last to wipe your perversion, satan-loving filth from the face of our great Christian nation! New York, California, New Orleans -- all struck by disaster, do you not see the writing on the wall yet ye sinners? Drown! drown! drown!" writes Samantha Dericks on the American Family Values Forums.
Bourbon Street is primarily UGLY, neon lights, strip clubs, people trying to entice you in for 3 for 1 drink nights, yucky smell... not unlike sodom and gomorrah http://www.maybe.com/blog/2003/11/back-from-big-easy.html
New Orleans!
Home of pirates, drunks and whores
New Orleans!
Tacky overpriced souvenir stores

The widespread anarchy and looting in what now should be dubbed "The Big Uneasy" are just samples of what lies in store for our big cities in the very near future, after the wheels fall off the rolling tent show we call America.
Too bad Hurricane Katrina didn't wait a week to strike, when it could have caught over 125,000 drunken homosexuals in the streets of the French Quarter, gathered for their annual "Southern Decadence" festival and "engaging in sex acts in the public streets and bars," just as they do every year. They would have had an opportunity to learn a whole new meaning for the term "public sex act" from all those Black ex-cons roaming the streets of New Orleans.
Kind of puts you in mind of the Biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah, doesn't it?
http://www.conspiracypenpal.com/rants/uneasy.htm
Why don't you all go pick on these guys too!
Brian,
Why don't you sit on a crucifix and take a spin?
Brian, people who read this blog regularly don't think like you do, and your power of persuasion is too unskilled and hysterical to change anyone's mind.
Also, doesn't "Christian" mean to live like Christ? You don't sound like him at all.
Did you read the last line of my post? I didn't say that those were my opinions, I only posted that to show you that what that preacher put on that billboard was not nearly the vicious attack that these other people wrote, but you are all caught up in what you assume he meant in that message. I have no right to judge anyone. I can have a field day just judging myself, but I am not blind to Gods judgment whether it be on me or a whole city or nation. I have been judged many times and will be judged many times more, but there are many people who think that there is no judgment, no consequence for living a sinful life. I love my children dearly but I do punish them when they misbehave. What kind of people would they turn out to be if I never reprimanded them for the things that they do? The bible says that "as in the days of Noah (Sodom and Gomorrah) so shall it be in the last days. This was never meant to be an attack on any individual person or persons just a reminder that God is a wrathful God. One last thought and I'll leave you all alone. If the sign doesn't apply to you then you should take no offence. But if the shoe fits......
and yes it fits me too.
Why, when a tornado killed hundred of people in the Jarrell TX 8 years ago, did no one go around saying God meant to get all those Baptists?
To think anyone can say what God means to do is. . .hubris.
Oh ye pharisees. Jesus ate with lepers and prostitutes. Given the modern choice between eating with Pastor Bennet and one of "those" sodomites, he'd pick the sodomite.
He who screams God the loudest knows him least. When the pharisees prayed loudly in the street (much like the baptists do at Italian restaurants Sunday afternoons) God did not hear their prayer. When the lepers and tax collectors prayed silently in the corners, God did hear their prayers, because they were truly sorry for their sins.
The pharisees of modern day do not honestly pray for forgiveness of their sins, for they don't believe they have any. It is not we that are evil, we question our morality - that makes us moral.

Now that all has been said and this Pastor has been attacked (I Ch 16:22) by the angry mob much like the apostles were for telling the truth. Put your feelings aside and look at New Orleans through the eyes of God's righteousness. The first thing they did was hold the Mardi Gras. Would God approve of the drinnking, carousing, ladies revealing themselves for trinkets, sex acts in the streets, etc..? Though you may disagree with this Pastor for his political incorrectness, he is dead on spiritually. The truth is often offensive to our human sensibilities. Thank God for men who will call sin sin even when it is unpopular. II Tim 4, Eph 2. Remember Israel's disaster when they turned from the true GOD. God either allowed the destruction of NO or caused it. Either way He had His hand it. Was it for their sin or the sin of the nation? Only God knows. But their sin is clearly seen. So in the opinion of those on this forum, it should not be named but ignored and anyone who dares to call attention to it labeled ignorant and unChristian. To tell the truth is the Christian way.
I can't believe some of these people.
I have to shake my head and wonder at what kind of crack this "pastor" is smoking to feel so superior to others in their greatest time of need.
This kind of shit just makes me sick. Words can't express how utterly disgusting some human beings can be to one another and the way I feel about them. I hope to God he gets caught doing whatever it is I know he has to be guilty of, the smug son of a bitch.
