Nice politicizing, pinkies. Here's how the Real World works: Natural disasters happen, it's the states that take control of things. Read the Constitution. The President gets involved when the state government asks. The President had FEMA in play before the levee broke, actually before the hurricane hit. If the governor of Louisiana asks for more federal aid, which I think she finally did, then the feds move in.

Now that you've shown your snarkiness, what would you have Mr. President do? Crash AF1 into the levee to personally shore the breach?

Should he have enacted the eevile Patriot Act and shredded Louisiana's sovreignty by sending in the Jackbooted Feds to take charge?

Grow the fuck up and get over the guy already.

ElGato:

What we want is a competent, honest, effective president.

what we are bitching about is a corrupt, lying fool in the White House who is only interested in fundraising and enriching his crony campaign contributors.

Why is it that "politicizing" charges are brought up whenever anyone points out the failures and mistakes of this President? Are you righties that wedded to the man?
Are you so certain that he never, ever makes a mistake?

People have been suffering and dying for 5 days now, and not enough was done to prepare for the disaster, and not nearly enough has been done since it hit.

What we want is intelligent, compassionate leadership. What we've gotten is speeches and slogans, which don't feed, clothe, or shelter anyone.

Locutor at September 1, 2005 3:54 PM

Some of us think that a natural disaster deserves as much seriousness and respect as a man-made disaster. Why weren't they "jack-booted feds" when they were helping New York City four years ago?

Boy, I love Solomon Burke.

He has turned our country into a Third World country. I don't care about "state's rights." People are dying right and left. Levee break vs. hurricane and we couldn't predict it, B.S. Either way, emergency supplies could have been there at least 36 hours earlier, which would have been the difference between life and death for some people. Why doesn't New Orleans deserve the same response as 9-11? What is the distinction? If humans cause massive destruction, then we care? Or if the victims are from a better socio-economic bracket? I think other presidents would have been not just active sooner, but on the scene.

I can hardly stand to watch the news. It looks like Fallujah over there. Or here, actually.

It is the responsibility of the Mayor to evacuate the people. See the busses sitting in the parking lot full of water? Also know that it is in the offical evac plan to USE those busses. If they didn't do their job locally that is their problem. You cannot depend on the government to come in and save you. Have you ever been to the DMV? Do you really think a lifesaving operation would go any more smoothly? The Mayor and that corrupt local government in addition to the stubborness of the people is to blame here. If you watch now, there are STILL people who are refusing to leave. That is the crap they have to deal with - now everyone whines and looks to blame someone - who is the easy target? BUSH, of course - it is easier than looking at what they might have done wrong themselves. It is pretty simple math... a cat 4 is headed for New Orleans, a city who's levees can only handle a cat 3. Duh.
How about the fact that this scenerio has been laid out in National Geographic, the local paper, and multitudes of other studies. The national weather services has always said that a major hurricane in New Orleans would be the worst possibility for a weather event in the US. They Mayor of New Orleans did not take this seriously enough, and did not do his job. Now he is trying to deflect.

Anonymous at September 4, 2005 11:32 PM

You must have been listening to Limblob - you sound like one of his asshole dittohead robots. So where was Nagin supposed to get drivers for the buses? And "buses" has only two s's, by the way. Not to mention, how were 100,000+ people who make less than minimum wage, have no credit cards, no cars (much less an SUV like you drive), some of whom were elderly, confined to beds and wheelchairs or in the hospital, and had no means to get out of the city supposed to get out on such short notice? Nice work there anonymous...spinning, that is. How compassionate of you to blame the victim.
