A little while ago Perry went ahead & shored up some more support with the whacked out right & appointed Don Willet to the empty spot on the Supreme Court. Seems that last year, Barrientos held up Willet's nomination, so Willet just went ahead and up & moved to Wentworth's district to avoid any such meddling by those pesky D's. Now the guy who created the faith based initiatives for Bush in Texas & in the White House is now moving on to take the ever lovely Priscilla Owen's spot on the bench. Now 5 of the 9 justices on the bench that will be responsible for dealing with school finance will have been appointed by Perry. Oh joy, I see good things on the horizon.
He is utterly unqualified. The gov's office did email out his resume after the press conference. He has maybe 2 1/2 years legal experience. The rest is political hack experience. And I say that with respect -- some of my best friends are political hacks -- but that doesn't qualify them to be supreme court justices. All the other justices (on the court and in recent memory) had significant private practice and judicial experience before going on the court. Turns out that's a hard job, and experience does matter.
And the 2 1/2 years was as a mere baby associate, with apparently no responsibility for either trial work or actual client representation. So, basically, no experience practicing law. Wonderful. This court promulgates the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, and decides important cases with precedential value governing Texas trial practice. How can you make an informed decision with no trial experience? Oh, yeah. That matters not. He has designed all the Bush faith-based programs. And he "reveres" the law. Good enough for someone, apparently. Not me.
Hate to compound the fact, but the gop has been appointing/running attorneys with zip legal experience for District Judges as well. I realize this may not seem as big a deal as the Supreme Court, but it is a HUGE problem. In addition, our good friends at Texans for Lawsuit Reform (who brought us "Tort DEFORM"), are ramping up efforts this cycle to put even more unqualified, right-idealists on the bench in District Courts. So glad the Leg gave them a payraise (insert sarcasm here).
Unlike Willett, most people being apppointed to the bench have at least tried a case in Court.
Not Don Willett.
Most Lawyers appointed to the bench have been in private practice in some way, actually practiced "law."
Not Don Willett.
And many lawyers appointed to the bench are Board Certified in some area of law providing them at least a credential of legal expertise.
Not Don Willett.
If I was a GOP Court of Appeals Judge in say, Dallas or Houston and I was in the middle of my term, I'd take a crack at this guy.
'Cause who would win the bar poll in the race next year?
Not Don Willett.
Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
Thanks darling Pinky for posting this. It appears that Perry wants to keep Willett's "legal credentials" under wraps. (read "lack of legal credentials") Did they even hand out a resume at the press conference?
All 8 of the current members of the Court either have prior judicial experience or are board certified in appellate law. Willet...not so much. He's only been lisenced since 1993, it appears, and the only appellate case that his name appears on is the the 10 Commandments Case. So let's just call him Moses. Actually Moses was a lot more experienece than this guy.
That's our guv, why have experience and reason, when you can have IDEOLOGY!
