PinkDome is a blog about politics. Texas politics, specifically. We wander around and comment on national stuff and every once in a while we jump completely oustide of that box. It never occured to us to become media watchdogs or critics of the mainstream press. But, like anyone else we turn to the newspapers. Why? Is it out of habit now? This morning we threw out some love to Karen Brooks. Here's why: Karen's honesty and good facts shine through in a world of mainstream media that is usually full of stories directed at someone with the intelligence level of Britney Spears. Story after story of such tripe and we begin to wonder is there anything worth praising.
What set me off on this topic again today? This bullshit is on the friggin front page of the Austin American-Statesman right now. We already got our "Tree Falling Story" this week from the DMN. Now the AAS has to have their own version. And look! The Statesman wants you the reader to guess why the tree fell!

We're not the fucking morons, AAS. You are. Quit treating us as if a good story on the latest Texas City refinery fire and rising oil prices or the decision by a Texas judge in the Vioxx case is not something worthy a front page splash. Tree falling, indeed.
One thing I know...that tree was not cut down to provide textbooks for the schoolchildren of Texas.
You don't listen to a journalist has-been in Beaumont like myself (and no longer in such a glamourous place as Waco). But here is the problem as I outlined it sometime back:
"I've filled the newshole with my share of meaningless drivel so I feel I can sit here and criticize. In fairness, nothing stories come from a variety of circumstances ranging from idiot editors to slow news days. It's quite common to see this on local television news. Hey, nothing happened, let's do a story. Make some shit up! Why? It's the newshole.
"Just remember, as long is there is an empty newshole, no stupid story will go untold."
Which brings us full circle back to the Texas Legislature.
Freakin' newsholes. They're everywhere.
One nothing story that happened friday was that "itwasme" didn't show at the Bank One bldg. for our little chat.
But Pinkdome showed later. Thanks for the kind words re my kid. And thanks for a great blog. I'm now hooked.
All right! K's Dad is a PD guy now. Welcome to this catty, chatty, and sometimes trashy world.
(And PD, if you don't make a T-shirt with that phrase on it, I'm making my own. In tiny letters, in the shape of the dome, placed where the logo would be.)
Of course we're making t-shirts with that pharase on it! Are you kidding! It's the best thing ever said about me!

Have you seen this before? It's a number guessing game: http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/guessthenumber.html. I guessed 44035, and it got it right! Pretty neat.
Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.

A great example of why blogs will eventually dominate Austin media.
