GOVERNOR SHOULD APOLOGIZE FOR ATTACK ON VETERANS PERRY SAYS GROUP OF VETERANS SHOULD LEAVE TEXAS

Austinâ??Today the Lesbian & Gay Rights Lobby of Texas (LGRL) called on Governor Rick Perry to apologize to gay veterans returning from Iraq for suggesting that they leave Texas.

Hiding his failures behind people of faith, Governor Rick Perry used a bill-signing as a public relations stunt at a Fort Worth church on Sunday to divert attention from his failed leadership on school finance and tax relief. Perry used the event to tout his support of the proposed amendment to the Texas State Constitution that would single out same-sex couples for discrimination.

According to Forth Worth Star Telegram reporter Bud Kennedy, Perry was asked in a news conference how he would tell Texas gay and lesbian war veterans that they cannot come home from war in Iraq and get married.

Rick Perry: â??Texans made a decision about marriage and if thereâ??s a state that has more lenient views than Texas, then maybe thatâ??s a better place for them to live.â?? (empahsis added)

Budd Kennedy, Perryâ??s Team Makes Itâ??s Political Pitch, Fort Worth Star Telegram, June 7, 2005.

Gov. Perry made the statement at a bill signing Sunday, according to the local NBC news.

â??It is outrageous that the Governor would ask a group of veterans to leave Texas,â?? said Randall Ellis, LGRL Executive Director. â??Real Texans honor the sacrifice and service of all our veterans. If Rick Perry will attack those who are fighting and bleeding for our country in Iraq for his own political reasons, then who is next?â??

â??This Governor prevented funding for nursing home care in Texas where many poor World War II veterans surely receive care,â?? said Bill James, a Purple Heart veteran of the Viet Nam War who served in as a rifleman in the Marine Corps. â??Is Rick Perry going to suggest next that they leave the state because honoring our commitment to them is inconvenient? Perry has chosen the very dark path of hate and division in order to cover up his failed leadership.â??

â??Rick Perry should apologize to all veterans for suggesting that Texas does not honor their service,â?? said Randall Ellis. â??When injured soldiers are coming home everyday from Iraq, we should honor everyoneâ??s service to our state and country, not judge them and tell them to get out.â??

Grow up GLBT. I've heard of reaching before, but accusing Perry of attacking veterans is a pretty big reach around the real issue. If you don't like HJR 6, and can't deal with a definition of marriage as soley between a man and woman, damn straight, you might consider moving someplace else.

African-American slaves (the brave few who were successful) escaped oppression via the underground railroad. If GLBTs are truly oppressed under HJR 6, we will see an exodus of this population from Texas. It's human nature to escape oppression, and HJR 6 is NOT oppression. The definition of marriage as solely between one man and one woman sets a standard and is a right that is available to all men and women.

Previous post was not meant to negate the years of struggle that racial minorities still encounter, or to suggest that "escaping" slavery was not accomplished without legislative action and a constitutional amendment.

You don't think hunting down fags and killing them for fun is discrimination? You don't think going out to a bar posing as a gay man taking a guy home and beating him for 3 hours is oppresion?

I am proud to be a Gay Texans and nothing will make me back down from standing up for what is right and denouncing thouse who are bigots and use LGBT Texans as a wedge issue and an attempt to stay in a position of power.

Perry is a complete failure. LGBT Texans deserve the right to protect themselves and thier families and passing another proabition against gay marriage is wrong.

I know how the history books will treat people like Perry and your children and grandchildren will be ashamed of our state's history.

Isn't Perry a gay veteran?

BTW, there is nothing more entertaining than watching bigots against gays try to use the underground fucking railroad as an example of what gays should do.

Many of the people in charge still think the South was right in the War of Northern Aggression. 150 years ago folks like "anonymous" ran around with torches and dogs trying to find out where their property had done runnoft to.

Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
