DMN columnist Holly Hacker (rather unfortunate name for a journalist, wouldn't you agree?) writes that Texas Higher Education leaders are by and large "pretty O.K., man" with the legislative session this year because they "totally got most of what we asked santa for."
Some might say that higher ed got what they wanted at the expense of K-12 that got, you know, the shaft.
Texas Grants got the shaft and I am feeling it. They raise tuition and lower the amount of grant money dispursed, damn this fucked up cycle
Really? Who are these "some", pray tell?
Please don't fall into the all-too-common habit of assuming a binary situation of "we can fund higher ed, or K-12, but not both."
that's BS. As a State, we *need* both educational systems to work well. And to work well, both systems need to be well-funded.
The funding streams for these two systems are largely different, anyway.
Besides, the real problem with K-12 was that the Lege couldn't tear itself away from gay-bashing and sexy cheerleading in order to fix our school finance system.
Too bad they didn't want more money for TEXAS Grants.
