Well, except Susan Combs. Wonder if she's running for something? A guest blogger sends us a thorough analysis of the obesity epidemic in schools across Texas.
As statewide elected officials play musical chairs during the next election season to the tune of "Vote for the Weasels", you can bet that Ag Commissioner Susan Combs plans to climb her way to the top on the backs of fatties...and not just Carole Keaton Strayhorn's. Combs' issue du jour is combating the rising rates of obesity among our state's children, and the DMN has used a scientifically proven questionnaire to get to the root of the problem.
In the grand tradition of Texas' standardized testing, parent May Tolson offers this unique tool to point the fat finger of fat blame for our fat kids. She says that if parents aren't responsible for their kids nutrition, it's because:
A) They donĂ¢??t have a clue
B) They don't have the time
C) They don't care
Don't be tempted to choose A right out of the gate! While it's true that parents don't have a clue, you retards who took the TEAMS or TAAS or TAKS (pick your generation) more than once just to graduate high school should know that we're looking for the BEST answer, and the best answer is always C. Always.
You heard it here first, folks, parents just don't care. But take comfort in that Auntie Susie cares (at least until after she's elected comptroller), and if she gets her way, fat kids across the state will be eating "Tofu on a Bun" and drinking "Soy Cola" for lunch. As for Grandma Strayhorn, she doesn't care about fat kids as much as she enjoys eating them.
Well then, don't be poor. Problem solved.
The problem with food costs goes directly to federal subsidies to certain food producers; sugar, beef, pork, corn, etc. These are mostly bad foods eaten in large quantities but made very cheap buy government money. Unfortunately, there are not large government subsidies to lower the costs of fruits and vegtables. If an apple costs only 29 cents while Twinkies went to $2, I think you would see people eating more apples.
Healthy food is expensive. Ten buckaroos won't go very far at HEB but at a Wendy's dollar menu, you can have a high carb, high fat feast for 4 people for $10.
