Criticize Texas! And for what? The AAS editorial board attempts biting sarcasm with mention of recent Wall Street Journal editorials criticizing Texas.
Texas' top political leaders ought to be overjoyed at recent editorials in the Wall Street Journal â?? that well-known bastion of liberal thought â?? that asked: "What's the matter with Texas?" Then the editors got testy.I mean, really...what's there to criticize Texas for? First one that can count to ten, wins a Toblerone!"But it's almost inconceivable that the Legislature would adjourn until 2007 without chopping property taxes. Skyrocketing appraisals are taxing Texans out of their houses and infuriated homeowners are ready to march on Austin," the Journal declared in its trademark piquant language.
The cherry on that sundae was an op-ed piece by J.R. Labbe, senior editorial writer of the Fort Worth Star Telegram, that was extremely critical of the governor who was once lionized on the Journal editorial page. Among the many harpoons in the Labbe piece was a dismissive description of Perry â?? a Republican for the past 20 or so years â?? as "a former Democrat."
I was somewhat shocked to read the WSJ article - though it was very correct. I have a general respect for the WSJ as I do think they try to be somewhat objective. Though I disagree vehemently with their "free-trade" policy agenda.
