In Austin tonight, Chris Bell announced his plans...for something, maybe...(SORRY GRITS) NEXT November. The .PDF of his speech is here, just right click and Download file. Other than his constant references to the "New Mainstream" which we don't know what that is, we liked a few things he said.
There is a New Mainstream in Texas that shares an optimistic vision of freedom, responsibility and accountability. The New Mainstream includes all of us who believe in rewarding hard work, recognizing new ideas and relying on each other and ourselves. Because â??we are the ones weâ??ve been
waiting for.â?? (We loved that part)
God gave us Texas to teach the rest of the world about freedom. And when John Kennedy asked the nation to do something not because it was easy, but because it was hard, he didnâ??t go to Washington, he came to Texas. This is where we make our stand. And we start by making it our top priority to dispense hope. Youâ??re either dispensing hope, or youâ??re spreading dispair. Youâ??re either for opening democracy, or youâ??re defending a closed political ideology.
This November? Challenge him to what? A duel? Such a strategy certainly would explain the Democrats' recent failures, but I wouldn't advise it. ;-)
Note to P.D. Odd years are those icky local races like Austin city council and that Bloomberg guy in NYC. The Guv is up in 2006.
