Can you legislate hate? Yes. Should you?

Wherever there is hate, there will be violence.

Two proposals are before the House to define marriage as between an man and a woman. Some Republican lawmakers say gay marriage is a threat to marriage. (funny, we thought it might be divorce that's a threat to marriage)

These bills are not just to define marriage. They are to exclude a portion of the Texas population that exist and are not going to stop existing because of legislation. These bills are an outright attempt to legislate hate on the last acceptable minority to hate: Gays.

Senator Warren Chisum says in today's San Antonio Express News:

"Obviously (homosexuality) has been going on for a long time and you know, there's nothing I can do to stop homosexuality and I'm not going to try," Chisum said. "It doesn't mean I have to be mean to them and I never have been. ... Just because I disagree with them philosophically does not give me that right."

and Wentworth said (earlier the SAN had these quotes mixed up. They emailed us the correction):

Sen. Jeff Wentworth, a San Antonio Republican who said he's not "anti-homosexual" but "pro-children."

I'm pro-homosexual, pro-children, pro-life, pro-gun and I'm mostly anti-stupidity.

But this is just tying a respectable bow around your hate speech. You're just turning into an eloquent George Wallace standing in the schoolhouse door. You should be the worst kind of ashamed.

Chisum is just an idiot so there's nothing to say really about him other than, "You are a hatemonger and an idiot." But, that's like calling a possum ugly. Everybody already knows that, including the possum.

These hate proposals are not to define marriage, they are to marginalize citizens. History will judge those that support and vote for these measures and they will judge you just as we judge those that stood in the schoolhouse door and refused to let black children enter schools. They were wrong 20 years ago and you are wrong today.

Call Senator Wentworth. Call all the Legislature. Call LGRL and ask them if you can help. Don't sit this one out, you'll regret it.
