Burning up the phone lines to Congress

July 26, 2011 Uncategorized

First off, we are some lazy people in America. When Greece was about to default and proposed austerity measures there were riots in the street. As America races towards a financial disaster, Americans have turned a deaf ear to facts and their ability to speak up and be heard by their elected officials.  I’m sure the retirees are burning up the phone lines with worries about their Social Security checks, but what about the rest of you? Have you called your congressman and asked them to understand basic economics?

oldnokiaphoneI’m a businessman and when we look at the budget and realize we are going to be negative, we spend hours in Excel doing math. We cut everywhere we can and always come to the point where we know that if we don’t raise revenue we can’t cut deep enough to survive. Sure, maybe it’s our fault we moved into that fancy office building and bought new printers and decided to pay for health care for our employees. But, now that we’ve done it we are stuck with it. I guess we could sell the printers but then we’d not have printers…we could reduce health care expenses but then good employees would start looking to work somewhere else that paid better benefits and we’d lose talent and that would lose clients and that loses revenue…see where I’m going?

It always comes down to we need more money. There may be some areas where we can increase prices, but we need new clients. It’s about revenue. It’s the same with the U.S. Government, we can cut a lot of stuff out of the budget. There isn’t anybody that looks at our federal budget and says, “yeah, we need all that stuff.” But, even after we cut out ethanol subsidies and whatever weird thing the very people that are being obstructionist now have put in the budget, there is still a need to raise revenues.

Whatever your political affiliation, we need to urge our congressmen to compromise and work together. Compromise is not a dirty word, it’s what we all have to do every day to function. How many of you never compromise when you get into an argument with your spouse? Now imagine you had 400 spouses? That’s a whole lot of compromising…

Fortunately, in Pima County, AZ, we have terrific congressmen. I do have the misfortune of having senators McCain and Kyl, so I have been trying to contact them. McCain’s voice mail is full, and the phone just rings and rings otherwise. I was able to get through to a person in Kyl’s office, but I had to ask her to take my contact information, so I doubt my voice will ever be heard by the senator. I am now sitting on hold to leave a message for Boehner. I have been unable to access any kind of contact information for Demint. I will keep trying. I’m proud to be an American again. :)
