SOTU: A chicken in every pot?

Tonight’s SOTU presents yet another one of those defining moments the 24 hour news channels tell us about every day. In a 24 hour news world, every moment is defining, every storm is super, every crisis is breaking news. President Obama is looking at a lose-lose in many respects tonight. It reminds me of my favorite line from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, “I feel like a country dog in the city. If I run, they bite me in the ass. If I stand still, they screw me.”
Everyone knows the speech will be about “putting Americans to work” and for the third year in a row it’s a promise that’s definitely all hat and no cattle. The democrats and the GOP can’t even agree on where they sit to hear the speech, much less any meaningful attempt to right the sinking ship that is the economy.
When the country really needs bold leaders, we are abandoned as democrats run to the middle and the GOP puffs out their chest on their recent victories and decide now is the time to finally destroy the middle class and public education. Cowards and zealots seem to the be the ruling parties.
Americans look to Washington with sad eyes. I feel sorry for those that still hold out hope that our elected officials will do something to turn us in the right direction without screwing over the people that put them there.
