Stabby Homeless Give Austin a Bad Name
A panhandler on Sixth Street stabbed a couple that refused to give her any money. The comments seem to mirror my own opinion of Sixth Street lately. The panhandling in this city is indeed out of control. The homeless shelter in the entertainment district is probably up near the top of the dumbest ideas ever.
It’s no fun going out to have a good time and being harassed by the homeless all the time.
Can’t we do what they did in Atlanta before the Olympics and buy them all bus tickets out of town?
Let the hippy comments rain down on me. Don’t care.

I visit Austin each week and have noticed the increase. As a professional in the health community, there are some issues of public health, mental health and safety that seem to be ignored. Austin has identified issues related to animal waste around Lady Bird lake. But sleeping in doorways, and on downtown benches, defecating and urinating around buildings and private residences seems to be ignored. Homelessness is a complicated problem but it must be addressed in a coordinated way based on evidenced-based best practices. Currently we are told that when a homeless group sets up camp around our residence we should call the police to ask them to leave. There has to be a more effective way to manage a public health issue.
