KLBJ Cancels Racist Show: Racism In America

July 21, 2009 Uncategorized

So KLBJ cancels “The Todd and Don Show.” A show I’ve never listened to, in fact, I’m too busy working at my job to listen to talk radio. Plus, I can’t stand to hear the people that call in…rampant stupidity and all. But, people will feel both satisfied by this cancellation and offended that “political correctness” has gone too far. I don’t think so.  Words do hurt, regardless of what we tell children with the whole “Sticks and stones” bullshit. Words have power.

Words have the power to offend, incite, reinforce and they have to power to uplift, empower and include.

I think the cancellation of the show is good for KLBJ. It makes some furious that “political correctness” has run amok, but it drives the real bigots underground. We may never change the way they think or feel about people different from them, but we can sure make them regret they ever utter those words out loud.

I was listening on the day of the “incident”. I was a fan of the show. Frankly, I was stunned that Don said what he did. Over and over. This was on the heels of referring to “tweeting” as “twatting” some weeks earlier. The fact is: the two hosts had great charisma, but were, first and foremost, the news director and the traffic reporter kinda gone amok. I don’t think Don is a racist, but I can’t blame management for pulling the plug to appease their advertisers and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. I’ll miss hearing them.
