Catholics and pro-life activists protested President Obama’s commencement speech at Notre Dame. Over twenty people were arrested in the protests and the president’s speech was disrupted three times, including once when someone shouted “stop killing out children.” Really? The president reminded people that this is a serious issue and the two opposing opinions will never agree, but the debate should focus on facts and the difficult decisions faced by women. He also asked people to quit reducing their political belief opponents to carictutures.
I think everyone thinks abortion is a terrible thing, it’s a heart wrenching decision for any women to make. The president replied to the criticisms with this quote that I thought was a very telling sign that he really is thoughtful and smart.
“So let’s work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions by reducing unintended pregnancies, and making adoption more available, and providing care and support for women who do carry their child to term.”
See? That is what people on either side of this issue ought to be working together to do. Reduce the number of abortions through sex eductation, not abstinence. Make adoption easier (stop banning gays from adopting). Provide health care and day care to those that do keep their babies.
Think people. Think.
