Governor Perry appointed Sue Evenwel of Mt. Pleasant presiding officer of the Texas Funeral Service Commission. Ms. Evenwell brings a lot of great qualities to the Herculean effort of regulating the funeral homes and funeral directors of Texas…she is the owner of Designin’ Women Custom Embroidery. But, she’s also a member of the Titus County Historical Commission.
Maybe she’ll require all coffins in the State of Texas to include custom embroidered pillows for the dead.
Most people don’t think about the death industry. Just like any industry it is ripe with fraud, non-compliance with state and federal regulations, collusion, price gouging and outright fraud. The Federal Trade Commission recently sent undercover inspectors into 104 funeral homes in seven states and just released a report that found that one in four (26) had significant violations of government regulations intended to protect consumers. San Antonio ranked number 2 in their operation where a full 64% of funeral homes flunked their litmus test for following guidelines and meeting regulatory compliance standards.
Ms. Evenwel may indeed be just the bulldog Texas needs to keep grieving families from the greedy hands of underhanded funeral directors and funeral homes, but owning a embroidery shop and being on the historical commission are about the least qualified affiliations I can see to take on this important work.
Her real qualification seems to be her affiliation with the TXRA, The Republican Wing of the Republican Party.
[...] No qualifications? No problem for Rick! [...]
