I live in Midland and stay in the closet. Exposing that gays do live in Midland would bring the wrath of the Baptists (shown on the film) on me and others that live here. I have no doubt that not a tear would be shed by most Baptists if all gays suddenly exploded in fire and burned. The biggest cocern by the so called “Christian” right after such an event would be, “Now who is going to do my hair??”

1) That lady is a nutjob. Period. Not a Christian nutjob, just a nutjob. Preaching hate is the exact polar opposite of what Christ taught us to do - love thy neighbor. Christ hung out with prostitutes. He wasn’t about the hate.
2) Christian does NOT equal Republican. Not all Christians (heck, not even all Baptists) are “mean” to gays. Please do us the favor of not tarring us all with the same brush. PD is (apparently) a Christian. I am a Christian - and a Democrat. And I gotta tell you, I am sick and effing tired of being accused of being a Republican, conservative, gay-hating, anti-choice, bigoted b**** by people who don’t even bother to find out what my personal beliefs are.
I don’t say this to be mean, or to attack anyone. I’ve lived in Midland (and several other conservative bastions in this great state), and I know it’s hard to see in those places that all Christians aren’t what you think we are - but we’re not. We’re just not. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t just assume things about what we do, who we are “nice” to, and what our beliefs are.

I’ve become a fan of Jim Wallis’ work for Sojourners. For those of you who aren’t familiar, he is the author of “God’s Politics - Why the Right Gets it Wrong and The Left Doesn’t Get It.” He also leads Sojourners and Call to Renewal, two groups that advocate social justice. He certainly gives Dems a hard time, too, but his unabashed criticism of the religious right makes him popular with a lot of the religious left and many moderates in the party, myself included.
My support of him comes from my desire, like so many of you, to find yourself a place as both a Christian and a Democrat. He is just one of the leaders that is helping give a voice to those of us that are both liberal and feel that we aren’t against God.
For those of you that are interested, look him up. Not to push anything on anybody.

The quote above also reiterates what PD says above. If these words bother you Wonk and jd0505, then maybe you should take your pary back from the religious right.
And it is a fact that most fundamentalist Christians do indeed belong to the Republican Party. And I am certain that not all Christians hate gays or think the way the lady did in the video. But, again, history can be a teacher and a guide. There were many good and honest Christians in Germany in the 1930’s. However, they did not think the right wing was a problem either (as obviously WONK and jd think as well) and the rest is, of course, history.
People typically judge a group or a party by what it does and says. To say the Republican Party or (fundamentalist) Christians have been kind to the gay community is not correct - quite the opposite actually. So if one belongs to either group, it is natural to assume that they too think as does the group they belong to. Or else why belong to a group that you do not agree with?
In conclusion, my experience with most Christians has been very negative. My partner and I are not welcome in the Church and if we are, it is a disguise to “change” us. Most Christians I have encountered are judgemental to me and do not want me to marry, adopt or foster children, give blood, serve in the military, teach their children, or live/work near them. Confronted with such Christian “love”, what am I supposed to think about them? That they love and care about me? An odd way of showing it.
I thought we didn’t believe anything Faux News said. I’m really conflicted.

I completely agree that the Republican party has been hijacked, and that the right wing is a huge problem, and is making Christians look like judgmental crazies. I apologize if I came across as saying any different. I wasn’t trying to defend the Republican Party (I’m a card-carrying Democrat, and have been since I knew what political parties were) or the religious right. The religious right as a movement has made me crazy since the ol’ Ralph Reed days. All I’m doing is saying that not all Christians are crazy fundamentalist freakshows. I mentioned that I understand why you might think that we are. I’d like to apologize on behalf of all of us who aren’t like that.

I would have to be a total idiot to think ALL Christians are like the one in the video. There are obviously kind and loving ones - as jd has proved above. Since I am not a God or mind-reader, I can only comment on the majority of those I have met or see on TV/radio. I will admit though that I have not made a huge effort to look for a “Democratic Christian” organization or speaker.
I hope that people like PD and jd can indeed show the love and acceptance of their God to people like myself so that not everyone that says they are a “Christian” conduct themselves like Wonk and the other fundamentalist Republican Christians that work very hard to single out and demonize those in the gay community.
